Overview

The 3M™ Portable Compressed Air Filter and Regulator Panel 256-02-01, with Carbon Monoxide (CO) Monitor, is a specialized device designed to filter and regulate compressed air for use with supplied air respiratory protection systems. It is crucial to note that this panel does not remove carbon monoxide from the air. The unit is intended to provide Grade D breathing air, as specified by the Compressed Gas Association Commodity Specification G-7.1-1997 in the United States, and CSA standard Z180.1 in Canada.

Function Description

The panel operates as a four-stage filtration system, ensuring that the compressed air supplied to respirators is free from various contaminants.

  1. First Stage (Prefilter B): Air enters the system at the inlet (A) and passes through the first stage, which traps particulate matter 3.0 microns and larger.
  2. Second Stage (Prefilter C): The air then moves to the second stage, where it traps particulate matter larger than 0.3 microns and coalesces liquid aerosols with an efficiency rating of 99.97%. Liquid contaminants are collected in the lower chamber of the prefilter and expelled through an automatic float drain (D).
  3. Third and Fourth Stages (E and F): These stages contain a bed of odor-absorbing activated charcoal to remove gaseous contaminants and odors.
  4. Air Pressure Regulation (G): After filtration, the air passes through an air pressure regulator, which adjusts the pressure to the respirators.
  5. Carbon Monoxide Monitoring (I): A sample of the filtered air is taken at (H) and continuously checked by the carbon monoxide monitor. The monitor digitally displays the CO concentration in ppm (parts per million) and features an audio and visual alarm that activates if CO levels exceed a preset level (10 ppm in the USA; 5 ppm in Canada).

Important Technical Specifications

  • Inlet Pressure (max.): 125 psig static (8.6 bar)
  • Inlet Pressure (recommended): 90-120 psig (6.2-8.3 bar)
  • Rated Air Flow (max.): 100 cfm (2832 lpm)
  • Outlet Pressure Range: 0-125 psig (0-8.6 bar)
  • Operating Temperature Range:
    • Compressed air at inlet: 35-150°F (2-65°C)
    • Ambient air: 0-110°F (-17-43°C)
  • Dimensions: 23.25"L x 20.75"W x 9"D (590 mm x 5276 mm x 229 mm)
  • Weight (includes monitor): 32 lb (14.5 kg)
  • Respirator Capacity: The panel is supplied with quick-disconnects for up to eight (8) supplied air respirators. The actual number depends on inlet pressure, airflow, and pressure requirements of the respiratory protection system.
  • Filter Cartridge Life Expectancy: 1 to 2 months (160-320 hours), depending on air quality and usage. All three filters should be changed simultaneously.
  • CO Monitor Alarm Levels: 10 ppm (USA) / 5 ppm (Canada).
  • CO Monitor Power: Two 9-volt batteries (30-35 hours continuous power) or optional 110-120 volt AC adapter. The intrinsic safety of the CO monitor is voided when remote alarm or AC adapter is used.

Usage Features

  • Continuous CO Monitoring: The integrated CO monitor provides real-time digital display of carbon monoxide levels, ensuring operator safety.
  • Audible and Visual Alarms: Alerts operators to high CO concentrations, low battery, or monitor malfunction.
  • Pressure Regulation: Allows adjustment of air pressure supplied to respirators to meet specific requirements.
  • Compatibility: Designed for use with 3M respirators, ensuring proper airflow and pressure within specified ranges.
  • Wall-Mountable: The unit can be wall-mounted directly in its case for convenient installation.
  • Industrial Interchange Connections: Features a 1/2" body size, 3/4" MPT industrial interchange plug at the inlet and eight 1/4" body size, 3/8" MPT industrial interchange quick-disconnects at the outlet.
  • Air Sample Metering Valve: An adjustment knob allows proper airflow to the CO monitor, indicated by a black floating ball within a green boxed area on the valve body.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Replacement: Filter cartridges are replaceable, with an average life expectancy of 1-2 months. The manual provides detailed instructions for replacing the prefilter (first and second stages) and air scrubber (third and fourth stages) elements.
  • CO Monitor Calibration: The CO monitor requires calibration prior to initial use, every two weeks for the first month, and monthly thereafter if used continuously. For non-continuous use, calibrate before each use. Calibration instructions are provided in the CO monitor User Instructions.
  • Cleaning: Prefilter bowl assembly and aluminum tubes for the air scrubber stages can be cleaned with mild soap and water.
  • O-Ring Inspection: O-rings should be inspected for cuts or cracks during filter replacement to prevent air leakage.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A table is provided to help identify possible causes and corrective actions for common issues like smelling contaminants, low airflow, or monitor malfunctions.
  • Record Keeping: Users are advised to record all periodic air quality checks, monitor calibration dates, filter cartridge change intervals, and any other service performed.
  • Storage: Before storage, check for moisture in the third and fourth stage filters. If present, dry the system and replace the filters. Dry filters can remain in the unit.

Warnings and Cautions

  • The panel does not remove carbon monoxide.
  • Misuse or failure to follow instructions can result in sickness or death.
  • Must comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and CSA standard Z180.1.
  • Breathing air must meet Grade D specifications.
  • Do not use with oxygen-deficient air; the unit does not increase oxygen content.
  • Not for use in IDLH atmospheres unless with a back-up escape system (SCBA/SAR).
  • Never alter or modify the assembly.
  • Ensure proper sample airflow to the CO monitor for accurate readings.
  • Always turn off air supply and bleed pressure before disassembly.
  • The intrinsic safety of the CO monitor is voided if a remote alarm or 110-120V AC adapter is used.
