What does it mean when my A.O. Smith FPSH Water Heater LED status shows 4 flashes?
    • R
      Randy PooleSep 3, 2025
If your A.O. Smith Water Heater's LED status is showing 4 flashes, it could be due to several reasons. One possibility is that the ECO has been activated, the Blower Assembly is energized, or there's an internal hardware failure. In this case, replace the ECO and gas control valve. Alternatively, it could be that a flame signal is sensed out of sequence, and the Blower Assembly is energized. Ensure that the burner stays lit and that the igniter wires are not loose at the gas valve; if issues persist, replace the gas control valve.

Why is the flame yellow on my A.O. Smith FPSH Water Heater?
    • D
      Debra MartinSep 2, 2025
If you notice a yellow flame in your A.O. Smith Water Heater, it could be due to dirt in the burner ports. To fix this, turn off the heater and gas, then clean the burner head. Another cause could be a restricted combustion air path, so check the intake venting arrangements for obstructions. Insufficient dilution air for proper combustion can also cause this issue, so inspect the intake venting arrangement for any blockages.

Why is the vent pipe too hot (above 170°F) on my A.O. Smith FPSH?
    • T
      Timothy NicholsAug 31, 2025
If the vent pipe of your A.O. Smith Water Heater is too hot (above 170°F), this could be due to a defective air flow restrictor. Immediately take the unit out of service and contact an A.O. Smith service representative. It could also be caused by not enough dilution air mixing with flue gases, so ensure proper dilution air is provided. If the dilution air is too hot, check for heat sources around the intake terminal and any blockage of the dilution air leg. Finally, ensure the correct burner orifice is installed.

Why is my A.O. Smith Water Heater leaking water?
    • B
      baileymirandaAug 29, 2025
If your A.O. Smith Water Heater is leaking water, it could be due to improperly sealed hot or cold supply connections, relief valve, drain valve, or thermostat threads. Try tightening these threaded connections. It could also be due to leakage from other appliances or water lines, so inspect other appliances near the water heater. Finally, condensation of flue products could be the cause, so refer to the “CONDENSATION” section.

Why is the water from my A.O. Smith FPSH Water Heater too hot?
    • G
      Gregory SnowAug 27, 2025
If your A.O. Smith Water Heater is producing water that is too hot, it may be because the thermostat is set too high. Refer to HIGH TEMPERATURE REGULATION for instructions.

What to do if A.O. Smith FPSH Water Heater has not enough hot water?
    • A
      Aaron VargasAug 27, 2025
If your A.O. Smith Water Heater is not providing enough hot water, consider these factors: the heater might be undersized, so reduce hot water usage. Low gas pressure could be a factor, so contact your dealer. If the incoming water is unusually cold, allow more time for the heater to reheat. Also, check for leaking hot water pipes or fixtures and have a plumber repair any leaks.

Why is my A.O. Smith FPSH Water Heater leaking from the T&P valve?
    • G
      Gina PerezAug 25, 2025
If your A.O. Smith Water Heater is leaking from the T&P valve, it could be due to thermal expansion in a closed water system. To resolve this, install a thermal expansion tank, and do not plug the T&P valve. Alternatively, the valve might be improperly seated, so check the relief valve for proper operation, again ensuring not to plug the T&P valve.

Why A.O. Smith FPSH Water Heater has not enough hot water because of thermostat problems?
    • S
      Sherri StoneAug 23, 2025
If your A.O. Smith Water Heater isn't producing enough hot water due to thermostat issues, first, ensure the thermostat isn't set too low by turning the temperature control higher. If the issue persists, the thermostat or ECO may be defective and require replacement.
