Glossary
AC Alternating Current
Coaxial cable Connection cable between an LNB and a satellite receiver for transmission of receivable
signals and the LNB’s electrical power.
DAB Digital Audio Broadcasting: The system additionally offers data transmission capacities.
Data compression is carried out via MPEG-2.
Data rate Number of data bits transmitted per second, specified in kbit/s or Mbit/s. The higher
the data rate, the better the transmitted signal.
DC Direct Current
DiSEqC “Digital Satellite Equipment Control”: A digital control signal for controlling
DiSEqC-compatible components via the antenna cable.
DVB Digital Video Broadcasting: Transmission of video and sound signals in digitised form.
DVB-S stands for satellite, DVB-S for terrestrial and DVB-C for cable transmission.
EPG Electronic Programme Guide:
Helps the user to select a programme by providing detailed information.
FTA Free-to-air services: Fee-free services which can be received without a special
decoder.
HDMI High Definition Multimedia Interface is an interface for transmitting high-definition
video and audio data.
Intermediate The frequency range broadcast from a satellite cannot be transmitted through a cable,
frequency and so the LNB converts it into the intermediate frequency of 950 to 2150 MHz. This
makes it possible for a digital receiver to transmit and process it.
LNB “Low Noise Blockconverter”: Reception unit at the focal point of the parabolic mirror.
It converts the satellite’s frequency ranges into the digital receiver’s intermediate
frequency.
MPEG-2 International standard for transmitting video signals.
Mute Remote control button for deactivating the sound.
OSD On-Screen Display:
Menu control system which is visible on the screen.
Parabolic mirror A parabolically formed mirror made of metal or laminated plastic for gathering electronic
waves broadcast from a satellite into a focal point.
Receiver Receiving device which converts the signals from the antenna into video and audio signals.
SCART 21-pin connector for connecting the TV set to the receiver.
Swap-Funktion Calls up the channel which was last set.
(Recall)
Transponder Takes on the processing of one or more channels via satellite (receiving data from
ground control, amplifying and rebroadcasting to the earth).
Toneburst Also called “Mini-DiSEqC”, it is a supplementary switching signal for reception from two
satellite positions. This signal contains no digital commands, but it can be used by most
multi-switches for shifting positions.
Video Bitrate Quantity of data transmitted per second in a digitised video signals
