WARNING: AlcoSense is a sensitive measurement device. Performing a breath
test less than 10 minutes after drinking risks blowing high levels of alcohol
directly from your mouth into the system which could permanently damage
the sensor and cause the system to read inaccurately. Blood alcohol levels
can continue to rise for up to 90 minutes after drinking, as a result we only
recommend using the Breathalyser after this time (and ideally the morning
after) to ensure your reading will not increase after you test yourself. Do not
blow directly into the blow hole without a blow tube – this can damage the
sensor and significantly reduce the lifetime of your unit.

Overview

The AlcoSense Lite 2 is a sensitive measurement device designed to provide an indication of blood alcohol levels through breath analysis. It is intended for personal use to help individuals make informed decisions about drinking and driving, particularly in the morning after consuming alcohol.

Function Description:

The device measures the concentration of alcohol vapor in a person's breath, which is then converted to an estimated blood alcohol concentration (BAC). It uses a semi-conductor sensor to detect alcohol. The AlcoSense Lite 2 displays readings in %BAC, and it can be configured to display different drink drive alert levels. The device performs a self-clean process upon startup to ensure accuracy. It also features a recalibration reminder to maintain its precision over time.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Reading Range: 0.0‰BAC to 2.0‰BAC. Readings below 0.1‰BAC will display as "LO".
  • Accuracy: +/- 0.2‰BAC.
  • Operating Temperature: 5°C to 40°C.
  • Storage Temperatures: -10°C to 50°C.
  • Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
  • Calibration Intervals: 12 months or 300 tests, whichever comes first.
  • Sensor: Semi-Conductor.
  • Power: Requires three AAA batteries.

Usage Features:

  • First Time Setup:
    • Set the BBR (Blood Breath Ratio): The BBR must be set according to the user's country of use. This is done by opening the battery compartment and adjusting a small slide switch located in the top left-hand corner. The manual provides a table on the inside back cover for country-specific BBR settings (e.g., UK and Ireland use 2300:1).
    • Install Batteries and Clean Sensor: Insert three AAA batteries. The device will perform a self-clean process lasting 1 to 2 minutes.
    • Set the Drink Drive Alert Level: Users can set their preferred drink drive alert level (e.g., 0.2‰BAC, 0.3‰BAC, 0.5‰BAC, or OFF) by pressing and holding the power key and using a pen or thin object to press a button in a hole on the battery cover clip.
  • Performing a Breath Test:
    • Insert a new blow tube into the blow hole on the left side of the breathalyser.
    • Turn the unit on by pressing and holding the power key. The unit will display the number of days left until recalibration is due, then "Wait" while the sensor is heating.
    • The AlcoSense will beep and the "blow" symbol will flash, indicating it's time to blow into the breathalyser using a pressure similar to a sigh for 6-7 seconds.
    • The result will be displayed. If "FLO" or "ERR" appears, check the tips provided in the manual.
  • Important Usage Warnings:
    • Do not perform a breath test less than 10 minutes after drinking, as high levels of alcohol directly from the mouth can permanently damage the sensor and cause inaccurate readings.
    • Blood alcohol levels can continue to rise for up to 90 minutes after drinking; it is recommended to use the breathalyser after this time (and ideally the morning after) to ensure accurate readings.
    • Do not blow directly into the blow hole without a blow tube to prevent sensor damage and reduced unit lifetime.
    • Wait a minimum of 5 minutes between tests. Do not perform more than 5 tests in one hour and no more than 20 tests in 24 hours. Frequent testing can cause a build-up of breath condensation or alcohol vapor, affecting accuracy.
    • Avoid testing after using mouthwash, breath spray, cough medicine, or anything else that may contain alcohol.
    • Avoid testing after eating ripe fruit.
    • Avoid testing in dirty air, e.g., a smoky room or pub.
    • If you are breathing quickly (e.g., after running up stairs) or holding your breath, this can falsely lower or raise the reading.
    • Perform two tests sequentially to get a variation between readings.
  • Understanding Results:
    • "LO": Less than 0.1‰BAC.
    • Alcohol present, but under the limit you set: Displays the BAC.
    • Close to or above the limit set in the breathalyser: Displays the BAC with a "DO NOT DRIVE" symbol.
    • "HI": Above 2.0‰BAC.
    • "FLO": Breath flow error (pressure too low or too high).
    • "Err": Error in reading (pressure too low or too high, or other issues).

Maintenance Features:

  • Recalibration: The breathalyser requires recalibration every 12 months or 300 tests. The unit will display "RECALIBRATE" on the screen when recalibration is due. Information on arranging recalibration is available on www.alcosense.co.uk.
  • Keep it Clean: Clean the AlcoSense with a soft dry cloth. A carry case is sold separately for protection.
  • Clean the Sensor Every 4-6 Weeks: Perform a sensor clean every 4-6 weeks. This involves removing the batteries, then re-inserting them. "Clean" will flash on the screen, and it will count down for a few seconds. This process removes oxidation or contaminants. If replacing batteries after a recent clean, double-click the power button to skip the process.
  • Battery Replacement: Use new, good quality branded AAA batteries. Avoid mixing new and used batteries or different types. Low battery voltage can cause inaccurate readings.
  • Careful Handling: Avoid dropping the AlcoSense, as sudden knocks can affect accuracy. If the unit is not reading correctly after a drop, contact customer support for servicing.
  • Accessories: Protective carry cases and packs of 20 spare blow tubes are available for purchase.
