Overview

This document is the user manual for the Ferrex 30 W Soldering Iron Set, distributed by ALDI. It provides comprehensive information on the device's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Ferrex 30 W Soldering Iron Set is designed for private use and hobby/DIY applications, specifically for fine soldering work on items like wires and Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Its primary function is to heat solder wire to a molten state, allowing for the electrical and mechanical joining of components. The set includes a soldering iron, a soldering stand with integrated features, and various accessories to facilitate soldering tasks.

The soldering iron operates by heating a replaceable soldering tip, which then transfers heat to the solder wire and the workpiece. The solder wire, which contains a flux core, melts upon contact with the heated tip and the workpiece, coating the workpiece and creating a strong joint as it cools. The included soldering stand provides a safe place to rest the hot soldering iron when not in use, preventing accidental burns or damage to surfaces. It also features a cleaning sponge for maintaining the soldering tip and adjustable workpiece holders to assist in positioning components during soldering.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: HS-060E-30
  • Rated Power: 30 W
  • Mains Connection: 230-240 V AC / 50 Hz
  • Solder Type: S-Sn99Cu1 with flux core
  • Solder Melting Temperature: 230-250 °C
  • Solder Diameter: 1.5 mm
  • Protection Class: I (the soldering iron has to be earthed)
  • Included Soldering Tips: Pointed (preassembled) and Flat
  • Included Solder Wire: S-Sn99Cu1 (lead-free solder)
  • Warranty: 3 years

Usage Features

The soldering iron set is designed for ease of use in various soldering applications.

Assembly and Setup:

  • The soldering iron holder (4) easily inserts into the soldering stand (3), with plastic tabs ensuring a secure fit.
  • The cleaning sponge (7) can be placed in a designated space on the soldering stand (3) and should be slightly dampened before use for effective tip cleaning.
  • Adjustable workpiece holders (8) are integrated into the stand, providing a convenient way to hold wires and small components during soldering.
  • An accessory compartment (2) is available for storing spare soldering tips and other small items.

Soldering Tip Management:

  • The set includes both pointed (9) and flat (5) soldering tips, allowing users to choose the most suitable tip for their specific task. The pointed tip is ideal for spot soldering and thin cables, while the flat tip is better suited for light electrical soldering work.
  • Changing tips is straightforward: loosen the fixing screw (10) on the heating element (11), remove the current tip, insert the desired tip, and retighten the screw. It is crucial to ensure the soldering iron is switched off and completely cooled down before changing tips to prevent burns.

Operation:

  • To switch on, simply insert the mains plug (12) into a properly earthed socket. The soldering iron will begin to heat up, typically taking 3-5 minutes to reach operating temperature.
  • Before initial use or after cleaning, the soldering tip must be "tinned" by heating it and applying solder wire to coat its surface. This helps ensure efficient heat transfer and prevents oxidation.
  • Users are advised to test the soldering iron on a similar scrap piece of material before working on the actual workpiece to check suitability.
  • For optimal results, parts to be joined should be cleaned beforehand.
  • The adjustable workpiece holders (8) can be used to mechanically connect parts before soldering, ensuring stability.
  • When soldering, the heated tip is applied to the contact surface of the parts, and the flux-filled solder wire is guided to the tip, where it melts and flows to create the joint.
  • To switch off, disconnect the mains plug from the socket.

Safety Precautions during Usage:

  • Always insert the soldering iron into its holder (4) when not in use.
  • Allow the soldering iron to cool down completely in air after use before storing it.
  • Never heat the soldering iron without a soldering tip attached.
  • Avoid contact between hot parts of the soldering iron and the plastic parts of the soldering stand.
  • Do not touch the hot soldering iron tip, melted solder, or hot components to prevent burns. The soldering stand can also become hot.
  • Keep flammable or heat-sensitive objects away from the hot soldering iron.
  • Never leave the soldering iron unattended while it is switched on.
  • Do not carry out soldering work on live parts.
  • Always work in a well-ventilated space to avoid inhaling toxic fumes produced during soldering. Wear eye protection.
  • Avoid contact between the solder wire and eyes/skin. The supplied solder wire contains resin, which may cause allergic reactions. Solder can also contain lead, so do not eat, drink, or smoke while soldering, and wash hands thoroughly afterwards.
  • Do not cool the soldering iron with water.
  • Ensure the soldering iron is connected only to a properly earthed socket.

Maintenance Features

The Ferrex 30 W Soldering Iron is designed to be virtually maintenance-free, but some routine care is necessary to ensure longevity and safe operation.

Cleaning:

  • Crucially, always allow the soldering iron to cool down completely before cleaning.
  • Clean the soldering iron using a soft, slightly damp cloth if needed, ensuring no moisture enters the device.
  • Clean the soldering tips using the cleaning sponge (7) provided in the set. This helps remove excess solder and oxidation, maintaining the tip's effectiveness.
  • If the soldering iron is used for extended periods, it is recommended to clean and re-tin the tip occasionally.
  • A de-soldering braid (not supplied) can be used to clean joints, de-solder, and remove excess solder.

Storage:

  • Clean the soldering iron thoroughly before storing.
  • Store the soldering iron and its accessories in a safe, cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, preferably in its original packaging, out of reach of children.
  • Do not store the solder wire together with acids.

Repairs:

  • Repairs should only be carried out by qualified technicians or an authorised service centre. This ensures that the repair is done correctly and safely, adhering to the design and construction requirements of the soldering iron.
  • Damaged mains cables should only be replaced by the manufacturer, customer service, or a similarly qualified person to prevent injury risks.
  • Never open the soldering iron yourself if it is damaged.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a basic troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Soldering iron does not heat up: Check mains supply (socket) and ensure the mains cable/plug are not defective.
  • Temperature of the soldering tip is too low: Unplug, allow to cool, and tighten the fixing screw of the soldering tip.
  • Solder does not run smoothly on the soldering iron: Wait until the soldering iron is hot enough, allow to cool, and check if the tip is loose.

Disposal:

  • Packaging: Dispose of packaging material according to local regulations.
  • Soldering Iron: The product must not be disposed of with domestic waste. It falls under the WEEE directive (2012/19/EC) and should be handed over at a designated collection point for recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Solder Wire: Do not dispose of solder wire with household waste or allow it into the drainage system. Dispose of any residue according to local regulations.
