3.0DRIVINGTIPS
3.1THEAUTOMATICEXPERIENCE
Smoothautomaticupshiftsanddownshifts,withoutinterruptionofpowerto
thewheels,occurinyourAllisonautomatictransmissionbasedonengine
rpm,throttleposition,vehicleload,roadspeed,anddriverorfeaturerequest,
suchasmanuallypreselectingranges.
Allisonautomatictransmissions,alongwithavehiclespecicationappropriate
fortheparticulardutycycle,canprovidesuperiorfuelefciencyandoptimum
fueleconomy.Invehicleswithamanualorautomatedmanualtransmission,
thepowerinterruptsthatoccurduringshiftsreducetheengine’sinertia
energy,resultinginloweraveragewheelhorsepower.Becausetheengine
isnotworkingefciently,itcannotrunatfullload.WithanAllisonautomatic
transmission,thereisnopowerinterruptduringshiftchanges.Theinertia
energybuiltupbytheengineismaintained,equatingtohigherwheel
horsepower.Asaresult,notasmuchenginehorsepowerisneededtogetthe
jobdone.Allisonautomatictransmissionsprovidesmooth,seamlessshiftsat
allpointsofthepowercurve,thereisnojarringpowerinterruptstojostlethe
driver.Allisonautomatictransmissionequippedvehiclesaremorenimblein
trafcandeasiertomaneuveroncongestedroutes.Vehiclesequippedwith
Allisonfullyautomatictransmissionswillkeepyouonschedulewithmaximum
operatingeconomiesandimprovedvehicleperformance.
3.2STARTINGTHEENGINE
WARNING:Whenstartingtheengine,makesuretheservicebrakes
areapplied.Failuretoapplyservicebrakesmayresultinunexpected
vehiclemovement.
Nospecialprocedureisrequired.Ifthevehicleisequippedwithabump-shift
leverselector,thedrivermustsimplyverifythatthebrakesareappliedandN
(Neutral)hasbeenselected.Thekeypadandstrippushbuttonselectorswill
automaticallyinitializeinN(Neutral)whentheignitionisturnedon.Forkeypad
pushbuttonandbump-shiftleverselectors,theVacuumFluorescentDisplay
(VFD)willdisplay“NN”forNeutralbetweentheSELECTandMONITOR
