HP 5 OPERATOR’S MANUAL
Threshing Cylinder Speed
Use the Concave / Cylinder settings chart below to determine initial settings. When the crop is
wet speed up the threshing cylinder and increase the clearance. In dry conditions it is possible to
slow down and reduce the cylinder / concave clearance to avoid crop damage. Notice the speed
of the threshing cylinder as the crop enters the threshing cylinder. If the speed slows significantly
it is necessary to reduce the ground speed and/or increase the concave / cylinder clearance.
Examine the cleanliness of the sample. When the threshing cylinder is set too fast plant material
can make its way into the sample, too slow and material may be lost out the rear of the machine.
To change cylinder speed insert the hand crank into access port on the right side of the combine
and mate the hex shaft with collar on the variable pitch sheave. Clockwise rotation of the crank
decreases cylinder speed. Change cylinder speeds only when combine is running and clutch is
engaged. See Cylinder / Concave Settings Chart Table C-1 for approximate speed according to
crop. See SECTION D TROUBLESHOOTING for threshing cylinder speed problems.
Cylinder / Concave Clearance
Cylinder / Concave clearance is another critical aspect to produce proper threshing action without
suffering seed damage. Examine the discharge at the rear of the machine. Reduce clearance if
there is still seed on the plant, which may require the ground speed to be reduced. If the samples
are severely damaged increase concave clearance and/or slow the threshing cylinder.
