M32 FLYWHEEL - INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE MANUAL
3.3 - Site Preparation
To prepare the site:
The Capsule that contains the M32 flywheel is
approximately 82” (~208cm) tall and 70” (~178cm)
in diameter.
Adequate drainage must be provided in
accordance with site conditions and local
requirements.
The hole must allow sufficient clearance to allow
free placement of the Capsule with adequate room
to provide and compact backfill. An auger diameter
of between 78” (~200cm) and 84” (~215cm) is
recommended. When in doubt, a slightly larger
hole is preferable to a slightly smaller one.
The Capsule must protrude 12” (~31cm) from the
ground, plus or minus 3” (~7cm). Thus, the hole
must be approximately 70” (~178cm) deep.
The ground surface must be leveled and smoothed
to ensure proper Capsule ground clearance along
the entire perimeter.
The bottom of the hole must be:
- Smooth enough to provide even support across
the entire base of the Capsule.
- Level, with a grade of no more than 1%.
- Compressed to ensure that the soil can support
a uniform load of approximately 3.5 pounds per
square inch (~0.25kg per square centimeter)
without settling.
When installing multiple M32 flywheels, be sure to
plan the sequence of drilling holes and installing
units so as to preserve equipment and personnel
access without creating undue tripping/falling
hazards.
CAUTION: UNEVEN AND/OR
IMPROPERLY COMPACTED GROUND,
AND/OR SLOPES IN EXCESS OF 1%
CAN CAUSE SETTLING OR OTHER
MOVEMENT THAT CAN REDUCE
BEARING LIFE.
