3.3 - Site Preparation
To prepare the site:
• The Capsule that contains the M32 flywheel is
approximately 82” (~208cm) tall and 70” (~178cm)
in diameter.
• Adequate drainage must be provided in
accordance with site conditions and local
requirements.
• The hole must allow sufficient clearance to allow
free placement of the Capsule with adequate room
to provide and compact backfill. An auger diameter
of between 78” (~200cm) and 84” (~215cm) is
recommended. When in doubt, a slightly larger
hole is preferable to a slightly smaller one.
• The Capsule must protrude 12” (~31cm) from the
ground, plus or minus 3” (~7cm). Thus, the hole
must be approximately 70” (~178cm) deep.
• The ground surface must be leveled and smoothed
to ensure proper Capsule ground clearance along
the entire perimeter.
• The bottom of the hole must be:
- Smooth enough to provide even support across
the entire base of the Capsule.
- Level, with a grade of no more than 1%.
- Compressed to ensure that the soil can support
a uniform load of approximately 3.5 pounds per
square inch (~0.25kg per square centimeter)
without settling.
• When installing multiple M32 flywheels, be sure to
plan the sequence of drilling holes and installing
units so as to preserve equipment and personnel
access without creating undue tripping/falling
hazards.
CAUTION: UNEVEN AND/OR
IMPROPERLY COMPACTED GROUND,
AND/OR SLOPES IN EXCESS OF 1%
CAN CAUSE SETTLING OR OTHER
MOVEMENT THAT CAN REDUCE
BEARING LIFE.
