Overview

The V230 Air Compressor, manufactured by American Eagle, is a robust and dependable air compressor designed for various applications. This manual provides comprehensive information for its safe and efficient operation, including technical specifications, installation guidelines, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting tips.

Function Description

The V230 Air Compressor is a four-cylinder, single-stage air compressor designed to deliver compressed air for a variety of tasks. It operates by drawing in ambient air, compressing it, and then storing it in an air reservoir for later use. The compressor is splash lubricated, ensuring proper internal component lubrication during operation. It is equipped with a pressure switch that automatically controls its operation, engaging at 115 PSI and disengaging at 150 PSI to maintain the desired air pressure.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: V230
  • Weight: 87 lbs.
  • Delivery: 28 CFM @ 100 PSI (Cubic Feet per Minute at 100 Pounds per Square Inch)
  • Maximum Working Pressure: 155 PSI
  • Oil Capacity: 1 Quart
  • Cylinders: Four Cylinder (Single Stage)
  • Pressure Switch Presets: Engage - 115 PSI, Disengage - 150 PSI
  • Crankcase Casting: Cast Iron
  • Cylinder Heads: Cast Aluminum
  • Pistons: High Temperature Precision
  • Valves: Stainless Steel Reed Valves
  • Crankshaft: Heavy Ductile Iron
  • Connecting Rods: Micro-honed
  • Bearings: Tapered Roller Bearings
  • Lubrication System: Splash Lubricated
  • Journal Bushings: Heavy Duty

Usage Features

The V230 Air Compressor is designed for straightforward operation. Before initial use and periodically thereafter, users should perform a few checks to ensure optimal performance:

  • Oil Level Check: Verify the oil level using the dipstick. If additional oil is required, use Stellar synthetic compressor oil (P/N C0087) or an equivalent synthetic 10W-20.
  • Air Filter Inspection: Ensure the air intake filters on each head are clean and unobstructed. Dirty filters can lead to reduced air output.
  • Component Installation: The compressor should be installed according to manufacturer instructions, ensuring proper alignment and secure mounting with four cap screws, flat washers, and nyloc nuts. Adequate space must be provided around the compressor for proper air circulation, as it is air-cooled.
  • Starting Procedure: To operate, start the engine and engage the system using the compressor toggle switch. The pressure switch will then manage the compressor's automatic function.
  • Engine Speed Control: Adjust the engine speed control to ensure the compressor speed does not exceed 1300 RPMs under load.
  • Safety Precautions: Adherence to all safety information is crucial. Operators and maintenance personnel must wear safety equipment (goggles, ear plugs, head protection) at all times. The compressor should never be inspected or cleaned while connected to a power source. Before maintenance, a warning tag should be placed on the power source or the belt disconnected from the clutch to prevent accidental startup. The compressor should only be operated by thoroughly trained individuals and never if it is damaged, improperly adjusted, or incompletely assembled. Guards must always be in place. The air pressure relief valve, which limits pressure to 150 PSI, should never be adjusted or disabled. The compressor's surface can reach high temperatures (above 150 degrees F), so direct contact during operation should be avoided. The intake air must be free of flammable fumes and vapors. Proper lubrication is vital, and the compressor must be installed in a level position. All operations must comply with pertinent O.S.H.A. requirements and all Federal, State, and Local codes.

Maintenance Features

Routine maintenance is essential for the V230 Air Compressor's longevity and efficient operation. Stellar Industries recommends following the provided service intervals:

  • Daily:
    • Drain air tanks.
    • Check crankcase oil level.
    • Check fittings and airlines.
    • Inspect clutch and belt.
  • Weekly:
    • Inspect and clean air intake filters.
    • Clean and operate safety valves.
    • Inspect check valve.
  • Monthly:
    • Tighten all fittings and fasteners (every 3 months).
    • Check all electrical connections (every 3 months).
  • Hourly (as specified):
    • Replace air filters (every 6 hours).
    • Inspect and clean compressor valves (every 6 hours).
    • Check compressor reed valves (every 250 hours).
    • Inspect and clean air check valve (every 250 hours).
  • Crankcase Oil Change: Under normal operating conditions, oil changes are required every 3 months. In dirty environments, oil changes should be more frequent. Use Stellar synthetic compressor oil (P/N C0087). The crankcase capacity is one quart.

Troubleshooting Guide

The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to address common performance issues:

  • Compressor runs hot: Possible causes include faulty reed valves, dirty intake filter, low oil level, or a leaking check valve. Solutions involve inspecting/replacing valves, cleaning filters, adding oil, or disassembling/cleaning/reinstalling components.
  • Compressor does not run: This could be due to a full air reservoir, disconnected belt, blocked couplers/hoses, air load against the compressor, non-working clutch, or a leaking check valve. Solutions range from draining the reservoir and activating the pressure switch to connecting the belt, removing restrictions, relieving air pressure, or inspecting/repairing/disassembling components.
  • Compressor runs too slow: Potential causes are faulty compressor reed valves, hose leaks, worn clutch, or a non-working speed control. Solutions include inspecting/replacing valves, tightening hose fittings, replacing the clutch, or inspecting/repairing the speed control.
  • Compressor will not stop: This often points to an incorrectly set air pressure switch or leaking hoses/fittings. Solutions involve checking switch settings and tightening fittings/hoses.
  • Air output too low (air pressure okay): Possible reasons include low compressor speed, dirty air filter, leaking airlines, or a plugged check valve. Solutions include referring to "compressor too slow" remedies, inspecting/cleaning filters, retightening hoses, or removing/cleaning the check valve.
  • Compressor cycles, air not being used: This indicates leaks in the air line or an incorrectly set air pressure switch. Solutions involve tightening hoses/fittings and checking cut-in/cut-out settings.
  • Air output low, air pressure low: Common causes are a dirty air filter, malfunctioning intake reed valves, or insufficient torque on head bolts. Solutions include inspecting/cleaning the filter, replacing faulty reed valves, or tightening head bolts to the required torque.
  • Air pressure too low (continued): Could be due to an incorrectly set air pressure switch, air line leak, air consumption exceeding compressor capacity, or damaged intake/exhaust valves. Solutions include readjusting pressure settings, inspecting/tightening hoses, checking air demand, or inspecting/replacing valves.
  • Air pressure too high: This can result from a non-operating pressure switch, internal contamination, or an unadjusted pressure switch. Solutions involve inspecting/cleaning components and readjusting pressure.
  • High crankcase oil usage: Possible causes include high oil level, oil leaks, or worn/broken piston rings. Solutions include checking/draining oil, repairing gaskets/seals, or replacing rings.
  • Blowing oil from crankcase breather: This could be due to a blown head gasket, worn/broken piston rings, high oil level in the crankcase, or a hole in the piston. Solutions involve replacing gaskets/rings, checking/draining oil, or replacing the piston.
  • No lubricating oil pressure: This may indicate an air lock in the oil pump, no oil in the crankcase, or a blocked pump suction. Solutions include loosening the oil gauge while the compressor runs, checking/adding oil, or removing/inspecting/cleaning the oil intake plug and screen.
