The APsmart Rapid Shutdown Device (RSD-D) and Transmitter are components of a rapid shutdown solution designed for photovoltaic (PV) systems, ensuring compliance with safety standards such as NEC 2017 & 2020 (690.12) and SunSpec requirements. This system allows for the rapid shutdown of PV modules when the Transmitter signal is absent, enhancing safety for emergency responders and maintenance personnel.
Function Description
The APsmart Rapid Shutdown System operates by continuously sending a "heartbeat" signal from the Transmitter-PLC to the RSD-D units. As long as this signal is present, the RSD-D units allow the PV modules to remain connected and supply energy. When the Transmitter-PLC is switched off or its signal is interrupted, the RSD-D units automatically enter rapid shutdown mode, disconnecting the PV modules and reducing voltage to a safe level. Energy production resumes when power is restored to the Transmitter-PLC. This mechanism provides a reliable and compliant method for rapid shutdown, crucial for the safety of electrical systems.

Usage Features
The APsmart Rapid Shutdown System is designed for ease of integration and reliable operation in various PV installations.
- Dual-Input Channel (RSD-D): The RSD-D features a dual-input channel, allowing it to connect to two PV modules, optimizing wiring and installation. When connecting to only one PV module, it is crucial to use INPUT1 port ONLY and short the unused INPUT2 side with a DC extension cable to prevent damage.
- Flexible Transmitter-PLC Options: The Transmitter-PLC is available in single or dual-core configurations and offers optional power supplies (85-264VAC for residential, 180-550VAC for commercial) to suit different project requirements.
- Outdoor Kit Availability: The Transmitter-PLC Outdoor Kit provides a robust solution for outdoor installations, including an outdoor enclosure and suitable power supply options for both residential and commercial projects.
- SunSpec Compliance: The system meets SunSpec requirements, ensuring interoperability and adherence to industry standards for rapid shutdown.
- Clear Status Indicators: The Transmitter-PLC features Power LED and Signal LED indicators. A lit Power LED and blinking Signal LED indicate normal operation. If the Signal LED is not blinking, it suggests a Transmitter-PLC malfunction, while an unlit Power LED points to a power supply issue.
- Installation Flexibility: The Transmitter-PLC and its power supply can be mounted on a DIN rail. The system supports various DC cable diameters and string lengths, with a maximum of 30 modules per string and a maximum current of 150A per core. The maximum cable length from the inverter to the RSD-D is 1000ft (300m).
- Wiring Diagram Support: Comprehensive wiring diagrams are provided to guide installers through connecting the RSD-D units to PV modules, connecting adjacent RSD-Ds in series, and finally connecting to the inverter. The diagrams also illustrate how to integrate the Transmitter-PLC into the system, emphasizing that the Transmitter-PLC's power supply must be on the same AC branch circuit as the inverter to meet rapid shutdown requirements.
- Labeling Requirement: A rapid shutdown system label must be placed no more than 1m (3ft) from the Transmitter-PLC or AC disconnect, if not at the same location, for clear identification.
Maintenance Features
Maintenance of the APsmart Rapid Shutdown System is designed to be straightforward, with clear guidelines for troubleshooting and replacement.
- No User Serviceable Parts (RSD-D): The RSD-D is not designed for user repair. In the event of a failure, users are instructed to contact APsmart Customer Support to obtain an RMA number and initiate the replacement process. Attempting to repair or open the RSD-D will void the warranty.
- Heat Sink Awareness: The body of the operating RSD-D acts as a heat sink and can reach high temperatures. Users are warned not to touch the body of the RSD-D to reduce the risk of burns.
- Pre-Installation Checks: Before installation, it is crucial to verify that the voltage and current specifications of the PV module match those of the RSD-D, and that the maximum open circuit voltage of the PV module does not exceed the specified maximum input voltage of the APsmart RSD-D.
- Power Disconnection Protocol: Always disconnect the AC power before disconnecting the PV module from the RSD-D. This ensures safety during any maintenance or installation procedures.
- Qualified Personnel Requirement: All installation and replacement procedures for the APsmart RSD-D should only be performed by qualified professionals. This ensures that electrical installations are carried out in accordance with local codes and safety standards.
- Documentation Review: Before installing or using the RSD-D, installers must read all instructions and cautionary markings in the technical documents and on the inverter system itself, as well as on the PV array.
- Grounding Requirements: For 180/550Vac power supply isolation class I, grounding is required. For 85/264Vac power supply isolation class II, grounding is not required.
- Troubleshooting with LED Indicators: The Transmitter-PLC's Power and Signal LEDs provide immediate visual feedback for troubleshooting. If the Signal LED is not blinking, it indicates a potential issue with the Transmitter-PLC, while an unlit Power LED suggests a power supply problem, guiding maintenance personnel to the source of the issue.
