Automat ic Shift Lock (ASL)
Applies to vehicles: with mu ltitronic or tiptron ic
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unint entionally .

The selector lever lock is released as follows :
.. Turn the ignition on.

At the same time
press and hold the interlock button o n the

se lector lever to the desi red pos ition.
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po -
sitions when the ignition is turned o n. To
move the lever from these positions the dr iver
must dep ress t he brake pedal. As a rem inder

tor is in
P and N:
When stationary apply footbrake while se-
lecting gear
A time de lay eleme nt prevent s the sele ctor
lever fro m locking whe n it is move d t hrough
the
N posi t ion (going from R to D). The lock-
ing element will lock t he selec t or lever if t he
lever is left in N (Neutra l) for more than ap -
proximate ly 1 second, without the bra ke ped -
a l be ing pressed .
At speeds above abo ut 3 mph (5 km/h) the
Automat ic Shift Lock is automatically deact i-
vated in the N posit ion .
Interlock button
The lock bu tt on on t he se lect or lever preven ts
the leve r from being accidentally s hifted int o
certain positions. Pressing t his button deac t i-
vates the selector lever lock. Depending on
the d irection of the shift, the selector lever
locks at different posit io ns . The pos itions are
highlig hted in the illustration

Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ign ition
unless the selector lever is in t he P park posi-
tion. When t he ignit ion key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in t he P pos ition.
Kick-down
Applies to vehicles: with multitronic or tiptronic
The kick-down features allows maximum ve-
hicle acceleration .
Applies to vehicles with a multitronic ®
transmission
When you d epress the accelerator peda l be -
yond the resistance point, the transm ission
downshifts int o a lowe r gear ratio depending
on the vehicle speed and eng ine speed . As
long as the accele rator pedal is depress ed, the
engine spee d is au t oma t ically reg ulated for
max imum acceleration.
