Insert the key into the ignition lock.
~
Manual transmission: Fully depr ess the
clutch pedal and move the shift lever to the
neutral position.
~
Automa tic transmission*: Step on the brake
pedal and move the selector lever to the
P
or N position .
~
Press the key ~ fig. 104 - the engine will
start.
By pressing the key
wit hout stepp ing on the
clutch or the brake, the ign ition is switched on
and off. With the ignit ion on, the steer ing
wheel is un locked.
You can only remove the key w ith the ignition
switched off . To do this, you have to press on
the key again. With an automat ic transm is-
sion, the selecto r lever must be in the
P posi-
tion .
When starting the engine, major electr ical
loads are switched off temporarily .
After start ing a cold engine, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because the oil
pressure must first build up in the hydraulic
valve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
fo r concern.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time . Repeat starting procedu re.
Driver me ssage in the instrument cluster
display
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not step on
the brake pedal to sta rt the engine on a vehi-
cle with an automat ic transm ission.
Press clutch pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not step on
the clutch pedal to start the engine on a vehi-
cle with a manua l transm ission .
Engage Nor P to st art engine
This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the
P or N

posit ion . The engine can only be started with
the selector in these positions .
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
along with a warn ing signal. It appears if the
selector lever for the automatic transmission
is not in the
P position after the ignition is
switched off . Move the selector lever to the
P
position, otherwise the vehicle is not secured
against rolling away. You also cannot lock the
vehicle using the locking button on the door
handle or using the remo t e key.
.8, WARNING
- Always t ake t he key w ith you whe never
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be sta rted or elect rical
equipme nt such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri-
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es-
caping from the vehicle on t heir own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve-
hicle can be exposed t o very high or very
low t empe ratu res.
- Never remove t he igniti on key from the
ignit ion lo ok w hile the vehicle is moving .
Othe rwise, the st eering lock could sud-
denly engage and yo u wo uld not be able
to steer the vehicle .
@ Note
- I n the event of a malf unct ion in t he elec-
tronic ignit ion lock a symbol in the in-
strument cluste r flashes with the mes-
sage
Ignition lock defective.
- Avoid high engine speeds, f ast accelera-
tion or heavy engine loads while the en-
gine is still cold. This could damage the
engine.
