In the upper speed range, the stage 3
intake manifold flap is also opened. The
intake air takes the shortest path to the
combustion chamber.
When the engine is switched off, both
flaps are open.
If the engine is idling, the two vacuum
units are evacuated by the appropriate
intake manifold changeover solenoid
valves. The intake manifold flaps are,
therefore, closed between the idling
speed and the switching speed.

In the middle speed range, the intake
manifold changeover solenoid valve
N156 allows atmospheric pressure into
the vacuum unit of the stage 3 intake
manifold flap.
The stage 2 intake manifold flap is
opened and the intake path is shortened.
