no liquids get into the cable connections or
the inside of the equipment.
Glass can break and cause injury! In work-
ing with glass components, observe all
appropriate safety precautions.

with acids and bases, follow the safety
guidance in the pertinent Safety Data
Sheets.
Caution: reaction vessels get hot and can
cause burns! During the distillation and for
a short time thereafter, do not touch any
parts of the distillation system behind the
Plexiglas door!
Do not operate the S 5 steam distillation ap-
paratus in damp or explosive atmospheres!

(Re)filling the reagent lines
Before you use your S 5 for the first time or after longer
periods of disuse, the delivery pumps and tubing should
be filled with the respective reagent, replacing any air or
distilled water in the lines. By this you make sure all rea-
gents will be delivered in the correct amounts.
Inspect the reagent containers and the tubing
connections.
Open the water tap.
Inserting the sample vessel
Guide the PTFE steam delivery tube (4.20) into the
mouth of an empty sample vessel. Seat the mouth of
the vessel properly against the Viton stopper above
(4.26) and secure the vessel in place from below by
seating it in the recess of the quick-release fastener
(4.22). Check for firm and complete seal of the vessel
mouth against the Viton stopper.
Take the pH electrode out of the protection vessel.
Rinse it with some distilled water over a beaker. Insert it
into the free opening in the titration vessel (4.16).
Switching the steam distillation apparatus on
Close the protective door and turn the apparatus on
using the MAIN SWITCH.
In the main menu, select Options.
