Installing the behr S 5
Connect the 8/12 PVC tube segment to the connection
nipple labelled water outlet (
) and lead the other end
to a drain.
File the tubing of the titration device and the electrode
cable through the opening (4.9, cf. page 10).
Screw the tubing to the titration device. Connect the
other side to the tirator (see user’s manual of the tira-
tor).
Make sure the hoses are laid out without kinks.
Otherwise the suction pumps cannot deliver cor-
rectly. Analysis errors may occur as a result, or
distillation may be aborted due to lack of water
in the steam generator. Also make sure the waste
water from the discharge tubes can discharge
freely. This is most important for the distillate
discharge hose. If there are bends (siphons) in
the hose, discharging liquid might suck contents
from the distillation vessel, thus causing analyti-
cal errors.
Electrical connections
Connect the titrator connection cable to the appropriate
port of the S 5: Depending on the type of your titrator, it
will fit into the RS 232 socket (3.4) or the 25-pin socket
(3.6).
Screw the pH electrode to the electrode cable.
Connect the other sides of the electrode cable and of
the connection cable to the titrator.
Fill some KCl solution (KCl 3 mol/l) into the electrode
protection vessel.
Gently pull the protection cap off the electrode and put
the electrode into the electrode protection vessel.
When you are not doing analyses, always keep the
electrode in the protection vessel. Make sure there is
enough KCl solution in the vessel so as to keep the
electrode membrane wet. Do not leave the electrode
dry; it would dry out and become useless.
In case you are using the container set KAS 40
:
Connect the individual sensor cables from the vari-
ous reagent containers to the central junction box.
Then connect the cable from the central junction box
to the socket labelled LEVEL DETECTORS on the
rear of the S 5.
Connecting to the electrical power line
First, insure that the voltage specification stated on the
model identification sticker of your S 5 corresponds to
the electrical line voltage.
Insure that the electrical power MAIN SWITCH on the
front of the S 5 is set to “0“.
Connect the electrical power cable to the socket on the
rear of the S 5 identified as MAINS.
Connect the mains plugs of the S 5 and of the titrator to
a grounded electrical power socket.
Calibrating the pH electrode
See user’s manual of your titrator.
