How to perform firmware upgrade on Billion 52xx
router
What you need
Your Internet access account details from your ISP - this is important as
you will need to have the login details from your ISP after the firmware
upgrade.
The firmware file – you will need to obtain the correct firmware file from our
website. You can access our eSupport portal via:
http://www.billion.uk.com/esupport
WinZip – all our firmware are usually zipped in a folder so you will have to
unzip it using WinZip. If you do not have WinZip, you can obtain it free from:
http://www.winzip.com.
Important notes
Only upgrade if necessary – if your router is working without any problems,
we will recommend you to stay with the existing firmware. There are always
risks that the router might not work if the firmware upgrade failed.
Always use a wired Ethernet connection – a wired Ethernet connection is
highly recommended when performing firmware upgrade to minimize possible
interruptions.
Do not disturb or power off the router during firmware upgrade – if the
firmware upgrade process was disturbed you will end up having a dead router.
Turn off any firewall or Internet security software – as firmware upgrade
process involve uploading the firmware file from your computer to the router,
it is best to turn off any firewall or Internet Security software to avoid possible
conflicts. Please refer to your software supplier on how to turn the software off.

Overview

This document outlines the process for performing a firmware upgrade on a Billion 52xx series router. It serves as a comprehensive guide, detailing the necessary preparations, step-by-step instructions for the upgrade, and post-upgrade procedures.

Function Description:

The Billion 52xx router is an ADSL modem/router designed to provide Internet access. It functions by connecting to an ADSL line, converting the signal, and distributing network connectivity to connected devices, typically via Ethernet and potentially Wi-Fi (though Wi-Fi is not explicitly detailed as a feature in the upgrade process, the "Wireless ADSL Modem/Router" label in a screenshot implies its presence). The firmware is the operating system of the router, controlling its various functions, performance, and security. Upgrading the firmware typically introduces new features, improves stability, fixes bugs, and enhances security.

Important Technical Specifications (as inferred from the document):

  • Default IP Address: 192.168.1.254. This is the standard gateway address used to access the router's web-based management interface.
  • Default Login Credentials: Username: admin, Password: admin. These are the factory default credentials for accessing the router's configuration.
  • Firmware File Format: Firmware files are typically provided in a zipped format (e.g., .zip) and contain a file named "ras" which is the actual firmware image.
  • Connection Type: The document shows an example of a PPPoA (Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM) connection type, indicating support for common ADSL connection protocols.
  • Network Protocols: Supports DHCP Server functionality, allowing automatic IP address assignment to connected devices.
  • Management Interface: Web-based interface accessible via a standard web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Firefox).
  • Ethernet Connectivity: Strongly recommends a wired Ethernet connection for firmware upgrades, implying the presence of Ethernet ports.
  • ADSL Firmware Version: The examples show "FwVer:3.5.10.1_A_TC3085 HwVer:T14.F7_1.0" as an ADSL firmware version, indicating specific hardware and software revisions for the ADSL modem component.
  • Router Firmware Version: The examples show "2.7.0.23(RUE0.C2)3.5.10.1" as the router's main firmware version.

Usage Features:

  • Web-based Management: The router is managed through a user-friendly web interface, allowing users to configure settings, monitor status, and perform maintenance tasks like firmware upgrades.
  • Status Monitoring: The interface provides detailed status information, including device information (MAC address, IP address), LAN settings (DHCP server status), WAN connection details (virtual circuit, status, connection type, IP address, DNS server, PPP connection time), and ADSL line status (firmware version, line state, modulation).
  • Firmware Upgrade Functionality: A dedicated "Firmware Upgrade" section within the maintenance menu facilitates the update process. This feature allows users to browse for the firmware file on their local computer and upload it to the router.
  • System Restart Options: The "SysRestart" menu offers options to restart the router with "Current Settings" or "Factory Default Settings," which is crucial for applying updates and troubleshooting.

Maintenance Features:

  • Firmware Upgrade: This is the primary maintenance feature detailed. It involves downloading a firmware file, extracting it, accessing the router's web interface, navigating to the firmware upgrade section, browsing for the file, and initiating the upgrade.
  • Factory Reset: The document emphasizes the importance of performing a factory reset after a firmware upgrade. This ensures that all new updates are applied correctly and helps prevent potential conflicts with old configurations. This is done through the "SysRestart" menu by selecting "Factory Default Settings."
  • Troubleshooting Guidance: The document provides critical advice for a successful upgrade:
    • Only upgrade if necessary: Recommends against upgrading if the router is working fine, acknowledging the inherent risks.
    • Wired Ethernet connection: Minimizes interruptions during the upgrade, which can be critical.
    • Do not disturb or power off: Crucial warning to prevent bricking the device.
    • Turn off firewalls/security software: Prevents conflicts during the file upload process.
    • Post-upgrade reconfiguration: Reminds users that a factory reset will erase settings, requiring re-configuration of the Internet connection using the ISP's details.
  • Status Indicators during Upgrade: The interface provides status messages during the upgrade process, such as "Upgrade in progress, Please wait..." and "Upload successfully, Please wait system restart..." to keep the user informed.
  • Reboot Process: The router automatically reboots after a successful firmware upload and after a factory reset, with prompts indicating completion.

In summary, the Billion 52xx router is a standard ADSL modem/router with a web-based management interface that supports firmware upgrades and factory resets as key maintenance functions. The provided guide is designed to walk users through these processes safely and effectively.
