Note that the 6-pin adapter is no longer available but you can still connect to a 6-pin diagnostic
port by using a 9-pin adapter and a 6-pin to 9-pin converter connector or cable. Links to the
converter connector and cable are on our website/store.
Important - If you have a Green diagnostic port, you must purchase a Green BlueFire Adapter. If
you have a Black diagnostic port, you can purchase either the Black or Green BlueFire Adapter.
Power Requirements
The Adapter is designed for 12 volt systems and in most vehicles, the diagnostic connector is 12
volts even if the vehicle is 24 volts. If you are unsure, contact BlueFire support as plugging the
adapter into a 24 volt system could damage it.
Battery Warning
WARNING!!! - In most vehicles, especially trucks, the Adapter is powered directly by your
vehicle's batteries. In some older motorhomes, the Adapter is powered from your ignition switch.
You can check this by looking at the Adapter with the ignition off. If the Adapter is blinking blue,
then it is being powered directly from your batteries.
If the Adapter is being powered from your ignition switch you can ignore the battery warning as
the Adapter is protected by the ignition circuit, otherwise adhere to the following.
If any maintenance is going to be performed that affects the batteries you must unplug the
Adapter first. Also, if you're going to take your vehicle out of service (eg. storage) and you don't
have a clean battery disconnect switch (no power spikes), then you must unplug the Adapter
before disconnecting the batteries and plug it back in after the batteries are reconnected.
Failure to remove the Adapter prior to doing any battery maintenance or disconnection and
reconnection risks damaging the Adapter beyond repair and is not covered under the warranty.
Vehicle Computers
Your vehicle is equipped with numerous computers (called ECMs) that transmit on a network called
a data bus (J1939, J1708, or OBDII). The Adapter communicates with the following ECMs but has
the capability to support others:
Engine
Cab (Body)
Instrument Panel
ABS Brakes
Transmission
