Overview

This document provides installation instructions for the Original BMW Accessories Basic Bluetooth Hands-Free Kit and the Basic Bluetooth Hands-Free Kit with USB/Audio Interface Retrofit. These kits are designed for BMW 3 Series (E90, E91) models built after September 2010 and BMW 3 Series (E92, E93) models built after March 2010. The instructions are specifically for cars with SA 606 (Business navigation system) but without SA 6FL (USB/audio interface) or SA 609 (Professional navigation system).

Function Description:

The retrofit kits enable hands-free communication via Bluetooth and, for the USB/audio interface version, provide connectivity for USB devices and auxiliary audio input. The core component of both kits is the Combox (U500/D), which handles the Bluetooth and media functionalities. The system integrates with the car's existing radio receiver (X13812) and, for hands-free operation, utilizes a dedicated microphone (B402/C or B402/O) and a Bluetooth aerial (W18/B). The USB/audio interface variant adds a USB/AUX-IN jack (V) for connecting external media devices.

Usage Features:

Once installed and coded, the system allows for hands-free phone calls via Bluetooth, integrating with the car's audio system and controls. For the USB/audio interface version, users can connect USB storage devices for music playback or other compatible functions, and auxiliary audio sources via the AUX-IN jack. The system requires programming/coding with ISTA (Integrated Software Service Station) via the "Conversions" path. Specifically, the Combox retrofit (SA 644) coding is needed for the basic kit, and both Combox retrofit (SA 644) and USB/audio (SA 6FL) retrofit coding are required for the USB/audio interface kit. Mobile phones must be paired with the car after installation.

Maintenance Features:

The document emphasizes that all work must be completed by specialist personnel trained on BMW cars, using the latest BMW repair manuals, wiring diagrams, servicing manuals, and prescribed tools, while observing health and safety regulations.

  • Troubleshooting: In case of installation or functional problems, troubleshooting should be limited to approximately 0.5 hours for mechanical work or 1 hour for electrical work.
  • Technical Support: If issues persist, an inquiry should be sent to technical parts support via the After Sales Assistance Portal (ASAP), including the chassis number, retrofit kit part number, a detailed problem description, and any work already carried out.
  • Cable Management: Fibre-optic cables must maintain a bending radius of no less than 25 mm. All installed cables/lines must be secured with cable ties and must not be kinked or damaged.
  • Adhesive Surfaces: When attaching the Bluetooth aerial, adhesive surfaces must be free from oil and grease to ensure a permanent bond.
  • Post-Installation Checks: After installation, a brief test should be conducted, the negative pole of the battery disconnected and reconnected, a vehicle test performed using ISTA to check for error memory, and a functional test of the basic Bluetooth hands-free kit carried out.
  • Programming/Coding: The system requires programming/coding via ISTA/P. This involves selecting the "Basic Bluetooth hands-free kit" retrofit and working through the created action plan. Specific coding operations (SA 644 and SA 6FL if applicable) are mandatory.
  • Documentation: The document advises against archiving hard copies of the installation instructions as daily updates are made via ASAP.
