Troubleshooting Guide

Detector Chatters, Beeps Erratically or Has Low Sensitivity

Addresses issues with erratic signals or reduced sensitivity, suggesting outdoor use and distance from interference.

Low Speaker Volume

Explains causes for low volume, such as discharged or incorrect battery types, recommending alkaline batteries.

Display Does Not Lock On or Emits Multiple Tones

Covers scenarios where the target ID is unstable or multiple tones are heard, linking to battery status and soil conditions.

No Power or Sounds

Details troubleshooting for a completely non-functional detector, pointing to dead batteries or loose cable connections.

Terminology

Contents of Box

Characteristics & Limitations

Waterproof Searchcoil

Notes the searchcoil is waterproof but the control housing is not, recommending an optional cover for inclement weather.

Buried Utility Lines

Clarifies the detector is not designed for locating utility lines like pipes or cables.

Severe Soil Conditions

Discusses limitations in highly mineralized soils or saltwater beaches, suggesting alternative detectors for such conditions.

Target-ID

Explains that Target-ID accuracy depends on soil, distance, burial time, and target proximity.

Reduce Sensitivity

Details how electromagnetic interference (EMI) affects detector performance and how to use the Sensitivity control to mitigate it.

Using the Detector

Sweep Method

Instructs on sweeping the searchcoil parallel to the ground for optimal target detection, excluding Pinpoint mode.

Headphone Jack

Describes the 1/4" headphone jack and how connecting headphones disables the speaker volume.

Using Headphones

Highlights benefits of headphone use for detecting weak signals and safety, recommending short cables.

Assembling the Detector

Batteries

Battery Life

Provides expected battery life for 9-volt alkaline and rechargeable batteries.

Battery Indicator

Explains the battery icon's segments and their relation to remaining battery voltage for alkaline batteries.

Speaker Volume and Battery Charge

Notes the correlation between battery level and speaker volume, with low volume indicating a critical state.

Depth and Target Display

Reading the Display

Explains how the display shows probable target identification and depth, and factors affecting accuracy.

Target Identification

Target-ID

Details the 2-digit Target-ID system, its range (1-99), and how it relates to target conductivity.

3-Tone Target Identification

Describes the audio feedback system providing low, medium, or high tones for different metal types.

Quick-Start Demonstration

The Basics of Metal Detecting

Ground Minerals

Explains how ground minerals affect signals and the detector's circuitry to minimize interference.

Trash

Discusses identifying and optionally eliminating unwanted metal objects like foil and nails using Target-ID or Discrimination.

Identifying Buried Objects

Describes how the Conductivity Arc indicates target type based on electrical conductivity, from iron to silver.

Size and Depth of Buried Objects

Explains the 3-segment graphic indicator for relative object depth and size, noting its relative nature for non-coin targets.

EMI (Electromagnetic Interference)

Details how external electromagnetic interference affects the detector and how sensitivity control can reduce it.

Pinpoint

How to Pinpoint

Provides step-by-step instructions for using the Pinpoint feature to find the exact location of a detected target.

Narrow It Down

Explains a technique to refine the pinpointed location for more precise target identification.

Coil Drift

Warns about potential sensitivity drift during continuous Pinpoint use and suggests periodic retuning.

Pinpointing Using Motion Modes

Describes an alternative pinpointing method used when not in the dedicated Pinpoint mode.

Menu

SENS

Adjusts detector sensitivity from 1 to 10, affecting target detection range and susceptibility to interference.

VOLUME

Controls the audio output level for target signals, keypad presses, and warning sounds from 0 to 10.

DISC

Allows the user to eliminate specific metal categories from detection by cycling through the Target Category Arc.

How to Work the Controls

The Display

Target-ID

Shows the detected metal's probable identification based on conductivity, with numbers from 1 to 99.

Battery Level Indicator

Visually represents the remaining battery charge using segments on the display.

Target Category Icons

Illuminates icons along the Target Conductivity Arc to indicate the detected metal's classification.

Target-Depth Indicator

Provides a 3-segment graphic indicating the relative depth of coin-sized objects detected by the detector.

Depth Indicator

Indicates detection depth up to 9" for coin-sized objects, with relative depth for other items.

Overload Warning

Alerts the user when the detector is overloaded by a large metal object or highly magnetic soil, showing '--'.
