Overview

The Aesculap ELAN 4 Electro Drill (GA844) is an accessory designed for use with the ELAN 4 Electro Motor System. This device is intended for processing hard tissue, cartilage, and bone replacement materials, as well as for inserting and removing bone pins, driving screw tools, and setting Kirschner wires. It is suitable for use in both sterile and non-sterile environments, with sterile separation occurring at the control unit.

Function Description:

The ELAN 4 Electro Drill (GA844) features an electric motor connected to the ELAN 4 control unit (GA800) via a permanently attached cable (5). The output speed is electronically controlled and can be continuously adjusted using the speed control button (2). The rotational direction can be switched from right to left by pressing the left-rotation knob (7). The device also supports an oscillation mode.

On the output side, the drill is equipped with a coupling (8) that allows for the attachment of various drilling, medullary reaming, sawing, and screwing attachments. These attachments automatically lock into place when inserted. To release an attachment (13), the rotating sleeve (10) must be actuated. The integrated gearing within the attachments modifies the tool speed, enabling the motor to operate at an optimal working point. The working end of the attachments features various integrated couplings to accommodate corresponding tools, with adapters as needed. The product is also cannulated to receive guide spears or similar instruments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Max. power: approx. 200 W
  • Speed: 0 to 1,250 rpm ± 5%
  • Rotational direction: Right and left rotation, oscillation
  • Cannulation: 3.3 mm
  • Weight: 0.8 kg ± 10%
  • Cable length: 4 m ± 10%
  • Dimensions (L × W × H): 122 × 130 × 27 mm ± 5%
  • Applied part type: BF
  • EMC: IEC/DIN EN 60601-1-2
  • Conforming to standard: IEC/DIN EN 60601-1
  • Classification acc. to Directive 93/42/EEC: Class IIa

The device is designed for short-time interval operation to prevent overheating. Specific operating modes and their cooling times include:

  • Drilling (clockwise/counterclockwise rotation): 60 seconds application, 60 seconds pause, 6 repetitions, followed by 30 minutes cooling time. Max. temperature 48 °C.
  • Medullary reaming (clockwise/anti-clockwise rotation): 30 seconds application, 30 seconds pause, 8 repetitions, followed by 30 minutes cooling time. Max. temperature 48 °C.
  • Drilling (oscillation): 15 seconds application, 15 seconds pause, 3 repetitions, followed by 30 minutes cooling time. Max. temperature 48 °C.
  • Saw operation with GB891R: 30 seconds application, 60 seconds pause, 4 repetitions, followed by 30 minutes cooling time. Max. temperature 48 °C.
  • Saw operation with GB892R: 30 seconds application, 60 seconds pause, 5 repetitions, followed by 30 minutes cooling time. Max. temperature 48 °C.
  • Screws with GB896R and GB897R: 10 seconds machine application, 10 seconds manual application, 30 seconds pause, 30 repetitions, followed by 30 minutes cooling time. Max. temperature 48 °C.

Usage Features:

Before each use and attachment change, a function check must be performed. This includes verifying secure connections, proper coupling of attachments and tools, checking for mechanical damage to tool blades, and ensuring correct rotational direction at maximum speed. The product should not be used if damaged or defective.

To prevent inadvertent activation, the speed control button (2) can be locked by twisting the safety catch (3) to the "OFF" position. To unlock, twist the safety catch to "ON". Attachments (13) are coupled by pushing them into the coupling (8) until they click into place and then pulling to ensure a secure fit. To uncouple, turn the rotating sleeve (10) in the direction of the arrow (9) and simultaneously remove the attachment. For long guide wires, a Kirschner wire protection sleeve (12) should be screwed into the adapter (11).

The drill supports normal operation in both right and left rotation modes, where speed is continuously regulated by the speed control button (2) and left-rotation knob (7). An oscillation mode and thread cutting operation can be activated by pressing and holding the left-rotation knob (7) for 3 seconds. In oscillation mode, the product rotates alternately clockwise and counterclockwise. In thread cutting mode, the product rotates gradually clockwise and counterclockwise, with a larger rotational angle in the clockwise direction.

Maintenance Features:

The ELAN 4 Electro Drill requires validated reprocessing procedures. This includes manual cleaning with wipe disinfection and automatic cleaning/disinfection with manual pre-cleaning.

  • Manual cleaning with wipe disinfection: Involves pre-cleaning under running water with a plastic brush, followed by spraying with a pH-neutral enzyme solution, rinsing, and wiping with a single-use disinfecting wipe. Cannulations should be brushed for at least 1 minute.
  • Automatic cleaning/disinfection with manual pre-cleaning: Requires pre-cleaning with a brush under running water, followed by mechanical alkaline cleaning and thermal disinfection in a single-chamber cleaning/disinfection device without ultrasound. This process includes pre-rinsing, alkaline cleaning, intermediate rinsing, thermal disinfection, and drying.
  • Post-reprocessing care: After every cleaning and disinfection, the product should be sprayed with Aesculap STERILIT Power Systems oil spray (GB600) using the oil spray adapter (15) for approximately 2 seconds. Moving parts like knobs and couplings should also be occasionally sprayed.
  • Inspection: After each reprocessing cycle, the product must be inspected for cleanliness, damage, function, abnormal operating noises, excessive heat, or strong vibrations. Damaged products must be discarded immediately.
  • Packaging: Products should be placed correctly in Aesculap ECCOS holder systems (Fig. B) and packaged in sterile containers to prevent recontamination.
  • Sterilization: Steam sterilization using a fractionated vacuum process at 134 °C for 5 minutes is recommended. All attached components (tools, accessories) must be removed before sterilization.
  • Storage: Sterile products should be stored in germ-proof packaging, protected from dust, in a dry, dark, temperature-controlled area.
  • Regular Maintenance: To ensure reliable operation, maintenance should be performed at least once a year, or as indicated by the maintenance labeling. For technical service, contact your national B. Braun/Aesculap agency.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Operation Temperature: 10 °C to 27 °C
  • Storage and Transport Temperature: -10 °C to 50 °C
  • Relative Humidity (Operation): 30% to 75%
  • Relative Humidity (Storage and Transport): 10% to 90%
  • Atmospheric Pressure (Operation): 700 hPa to 1,060 hPa
  • Atmospheric Pressure (Storage and Transport): 500 hPa to 1,060 hPa

Disposal:

The user institution is obligated to process the product before its disposal, following validated reprocessing procedures. National regulations for disposal or recycling of the product, its components, and packaging must be observed. Products marked with the WEEE symbol are subject to separate collection of electrical and electronic devices, with free disposal provided by the manufacturer within the European Union.
