Do you have a question about the Braun Aesculap ELAN 4 electro GA844 and is the answer not in the manual?
The Aesculap ELAN 4 Electro Drill (GA844) is an accessory designed for use with the ELAN 4 Electro Motor System. This device is intended for processing hard tissue, cartilage, and bone replacement materials, as well as for inserting and removing bone pins, driving screw tools, and setting Kirschner wires. It is suitable for use in both sterile and non-sterile environments, with sterile separation occurring at the control unit.
The ELAN 4 Electro Drill (GA844) features an electric motor connected to the ELAN 4 control unit (GA800) via a permanently attached cable (5). The output speed is electronically controlled and can be continuously adjusted using the speed control button (2). The rotational direction can be switched from right to left by pressing the left-rotation knob (7). The device also supports an oscillation mode.
On the output side, the drill is equipped with a coupling (8) that allows for the attachment of various drilling, medullary reaming, sawing, and screwing attachments. These attachments automatically lock into place when inserted. To release an attachment (13), the rotating sleeve (10) must be actuated. The integrated gearing within the attachments modifies the tool speed, enabling the motor to operate at an optimal working point. The working end of the attachments features various integrated couplings to accommodate corresponding tools, with adapters as needed. The product is also cannulated to receive guide spears or similar instruments.
The device is designed for short-time interval operation to prevent overheating. Specific operating modes and their cooling times include:
Before each use and attachment change, a function check must be performed. This includes verifying secure connections, proper coupling of attachments and tools, checking for mechanical damage to tool blades, and ensuring correct rotational direction at maximum speed. The product should not be used if damaged or defective.
To prevent inadvertent activation, the speed control button (2) can be locked by twisting the safety catch (3) to the "OFF" position. To unlock, twist the safety catch to "ON". Attachments (13) are coupled by pushing them into the coupling (8) until they click into place and then pulling to ensure a secure fit. To uncouple, turn the rotating sleeve (10) in the direction of the arrow (9) and simultaneously remove the attachment. For long guide wires, a Kirschner wire protection sleeve (12) should be screwed into the adapter (11).
The drill supports normal operation in both right and left rotation modes, where speed is continuously regulated by the speed control button (2) and left-rotation knob (7). An oscillation mode and thread cutting operation can be activated by pressing and holding the left-rotation knob (7) for 3 seconds. In oscillation mode, the product rotates alternately clockwise and counterclockwise. In thread cutting mode, the product rotates gradually clockwise and counterclockwise, with a larger rotational angle in the clockwise direction.
The ELAN 4 Electro Drill requires validated reprocessing procedures. This includes manual cleaning with wipe disinfection and automatic cleaning/disinfection with manual pre-cleaning.
The user institution is obligated to process the product before its disposal, following validated reprocessing procedures. National regulations for disposal or recycling of the product, its components, and packaging must be observed. Products marked with the WEEE symbol are subject to separate collection of electrical and electronic devices, with free disposal provided by the manufacturer within the European Union.
