Overview

This document is a product safety guide for Brother DCP-J4110DW, MFC-J2310, J2510, J4410DW, J4510DW, J4610DW, and J4710DW machines. It provides essential information on how to safely use and maintain these devices, emphasizing precautions to prevent injury, electrical shock, fire, and damage to the machine.

Function Description

The Brother machines covered by this guide are multi-function devices designed for office use, capable of printing, and potentially other functions like scanning, copying, and faxing, given the mention of telephone (RJ-11) and Ethernet (Network) models. The guide highlights the importance of proper setup and handling to ensure reliable operation. These machines are designed to be connected to a standard grounded AC power source and, for certain models, to telephone lines or Ethernet networks. They incorporate features like a Touchpanel for user interaction and are designed to be energy-efficient, meeting ENERGY STAR® specifications.

Usage Features

The guide outlines several key usage features and best practices for operating the machine safely and effectively:

  • Placement: The machine should be placed on a flat, stable surface free from shocks and vibrations, such as a desk. A dry, well-ventilated location with a temperature between 10 °C and 35 °C is recommended. It should be near a telephone socket (for MFC models) and a standard grounded electrical socket.
  • Ventilation: The casing has slots and openings for ventilation, which must not be blocked or covered. Placing the machine on soft surfaces like a bed, sofa, or rug, or near radiators/heaters, or in a built-in installation without proper ventilation, is prohibited to prevent overheating and fire risks.
  • Power Connection: The machine must be connected to an adjacent grounded AC power source within the specified voltage range. Using a DC power source or inverter is prohibited. For models with a 3-wire grounded plug, it must be inserted into a grounded power outlet. For Taiwan, specific regulations regarding low power radio-frequency devices are mentioned, emphasizing that users are not allowed to change frequency, enhance transmitting power, or alter original characteristics without DGT permission.
  • Handling Large Paper (MFC-J4710DW): When using large paper sizes like A3, Legal, or Ledger, the lower tray may need to be extended. Users are advised to position the machine so the extended tray does not protrude past the table edge to prevent accidental impact and potential injury or machine fall.
  • Carrying the Machine: When carrying the machine, users should slide their hands into the handhold indentations on each side. It is crucial not to carry the machine by holding the scanner cover, Jam Clear Cover, manual feed slot cover, or control panel, as this could cause it to slip and result in injury. For the MFC-J4710DW, the lower tray should be removed if extended for large paper before carrying, as the paper's weight could cause the tray to fall.
  • Touchscreen Interaction: Users are advised not to touch the Touchscreen immediately after plugging in the power cord or turning on the machine to avoid errors.
  • Emergency Procedures: In case of unusual heat, smoke, strong smells, or liquid spills, the machine should be immediately unplugged from the electrical socket, and Brother customer service or a local dealer should be contacted.
  • Network Connection (Network models only): The machine should not be connected to a LAN connection subject to over-voltages.
  • USB Cable Length: When connecting to a computer via USB, a cable not exceeding 2 meters in length should be used to ensure compliance with EN55022 (CISPR Publication 22)/Class B for radio interference.

Maintenance Features

The guide provides clear instructions and warnings regarding the maintenance of the Brother machines:

  • Cleaning: Before cleaning the outside of the machine and the scanner glass, the product must be unplugged from the wall socket. Only a damp cloth should be used; liquid or aerosol cleaners, flammable substances, sprays, organic solvents, alcohol, or ammonia are strictly prohibited for cleaning the inside or outside of the machine, as they pose risks of fire or electrical shock.
  • Internal Access: Users are explicitly warned not to attempt to service the machine themselves. Opening or removing covers can expose them to dangerous voltages and other risks, and will void the warranty. For any problems, Brother customer service or a local dealer should be contacted.
  • Power Cord and Cables: Before accessing the inside of the machine for routine maintenance or cleaning, the power cord, telephone (RJ-11) cables (for MFC models), and Ethernet (Network models only) cables must be unplugged from the machine.
  • Damaged Components: If the power cord is frayed or damaged, or if the machine has been dropped or its casing damaged, it should not be used. This could lead to electrical shock or fire. Servicing by qualified personnel is required under such conditions.
  • Plug Insertion: Always ensure the plug is fully inserted into the electrical socket to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Power Cord Handling: Do not pull on the middle of the AC power cord, allow anything to rest on it, or place the machine where people might step on the cord. These actions can cause electrical shock or fire.
  • Extension Cords: Brother strongly recommends against using any type of extension cord. If an extension cord must be used, ensure that the total ampere ratings of all products plugged into it do not exceed its ampere rating.
  • Serial Number and Labels: The serial number and instruction labels affixed to the machine should not be removed.
  • Ink Cartridge Installation: After ink cartridges are installed, the machine should not be tipped, as this may cause ink spillage and internal damage.
  • Document Handling: Do not touch a document during printing or try to pick up pages before they have finished printing and exited the machine, as this can cause injury by trapping fingers in the rollers. Also, do not place anything in front of the machine that would block printouts or in the path of received faxes.
  • Interference Sources: The machine should not be placed near heaters, air conditioners, water, chemicals, or devices containing magnets or generating magnetic fields, as this could cause a short circuit or fire. It should also not be placed next to sources of interference like speakers or non-Brother cordless telephone base units, which could affect its electronic components.
  • Unusual Performance: If the product exhibits a distinct change in performance, it indicates a need for service by authorized personnel.
  • Memory Disruption: Disruption of power can wipe out information in the machine's memory.
  • Unlawful Copying: The guide includes a list of documents (e.g., currency, passports, postage stamps) that it may be unlawful to reproduce, advising users to check with legal advisers or authorities if in doubt. Copyrighted works should not be copied unlawfully.
