Overview

The Bull Single Side Burner is an outdoor cooking gas appliance designed for installation into a non-combustible masonry structure. It is available in two models: #60008 for Liquid Propane (LP) and #60009 for Natural Gas (NG). This appliance is intended for outdoor use only and should not be installed in or on recreational vehicles, boats, garages, porches, breezeways, sheds, or other enclosed areas. It is also not designed for use with a grill cart.

Function Description:

The Bull Single Side Burner provides an additional cooking surface for outdoor kitchens, allowing users to prepare side dishes, sauces, or other items that complement grilling. It features a single burner with a control knob for adjusting the flame and cooking temperature. The appliance is designed for permanent installation into an island or counter, providing a seamless integration into an outdoor living space.

    • Must be constructed and marked in accordance with US Department of Transportation specifications.
    • Must be securely fastened in an upright position.
    • Must be equipped with an arrangement for vapor withdrawal.
    • Must include a collar to protect the cylinder valve.
    • Uses a Type 1 tank valve.
    • Must have a listed overfilling prevention device.
  • LP Gas Pressure Regulator and Hose Assembly: Supplied with the unit, must be used without alteration, and be less than 59 inches in length.
  • Island Enclosure Ventilation:
    • Non-combustible material required for cabinet construction.
    • Upper vents: Located within 5 inches (12.7 cm / 127 mm) from the top of the island enclosure to the bottom of the vent.
    • Lower vents: Located within 1 inch (2.54 cm / 25.4 mm) from the bottom of the island enclosure to the bottom of the first vent openings and no more than 5 inches (12.7 cm / 127 mm) from the bottom of the island enclosure to the top of the vent.
    • Vents must meet ANSI Standard codes if not using Bull vents.
    • Total free area for openings: Not less than 1 sq in (6.45 sq cm / 645 sq mm) per lb./kg of stored fuel capacity per vent.
    • Minimum vent opening dimensions: Must permit entrance of a 1/8 in (.31 cm / 3.17 mm) diameter rod.
  • LP Tank Storage Area: Must be isolated from the single side burner and vented.
  • Minimum/Maximum Pot Sizes: Between 4 3/4 inches (120mm) and 8 3/4 inches (220mm) in diameter.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The unit comes fully assembled. Professional installation and hookup are strongly recommended. It requires a wall opening for insertion into a masonry structure.
  • Gas Connections:
    • Natural Gas: Requires an "ON-OFF" shutoff valve for the outdoor gas supply source. Pipe sealing compound or pipe thread tape resistant to natural gas should be used on male pipe threads. The appliance must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during high-pressure testing and isolated by closing its individual valve during low-pressure testing.
    • LP Gas: Requires connection to a standard 20 lb. LP gas cylinder. The black coupling nut of the hose and regulator assembly is turned clockwise onto the cylinder valve. The LP tank must be properly secured within the structure using a retention system to prevent it from being knocked over.
  • Lighting Procedure:
    1. Ensure gas supply is open (LP cylinder or natural gas valve).
    2. Push in the control knob completely and rotate slowly (3-4 seconds) about 1/4 turn counter-clockwise until a click is heard, indicating the igniter spark.
    3. If the burner does not light, return the knob to 'OFF', wait several minutes for gas to disperse, and repeat.
    4. Adjust the control knob to the desired cooking temperature.
  • Manual Lighting: If the igniter fails, the burner can be manually lit with a fireplace-type match or long-necked butane lighter placed near the burner ports.
  • Burn-off: Before first use, burn the side burner on "HIGH" for about five minutes to eliminate odors and foreign matter.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always open the lid before lighting.
    • Never test for gas leaks with a lighted match or open flame; use a soap solution.
    • Do not store or use flammable vapors/liquids near the appliance.
    • Do not store empty or full spare gas cylinders or chemicals under or near the appliance.
    • Keep the fuel hose away from hot surfaces and dripping grease.
    • Visually inspect the hose for damage before each use.
    • Never light the side burner with the lid closed.
    • Never lean over the cooking surface while lighting.
    • Use barbecue tools with wood handles and insulated oven mitts when operating.
    • If gas odor persists, shut off gas, extinguish flames, open the lid, and contact the gas supplier or fire department.
    • Do not move the appliance when in use.
    • Turn off the gas supply at the source after usage.
    • Any modification of the appliance may be dangerous and voids the warranty.
  • Conversion: Gas valves are pre-set at the factory for either LP or Natural Gas. Conversion to a different gas type requires contacting a Bull grill dealer, licensed plumber, or authorized service center for conversion kits and professional service. Unauthorized conversion voids the warranty and can be dangerous.

Maintenance Features:

  • Gas Leak Check: Must be performed prior to first use, at the beginning of each new season, or whenever the LP cylinder is changed. Use a soap solution on all gas connections; bubbles indicate a leak.
  • Burner Cleaning:
    1. Remove the cooking grate.
    2. Inspect and clear clogged ports with a stiff wire.
    3. Use a narrow bottlebrush to clean burner openings.
    4. Inspect the burner assembly for corrosion.
    5. This procedure should be followed at least once a month or after extended periods of non-use to prevent "FLASH-BACK" (fire in and around burner tubes caused by obstructions like spider webs).
  • Igniter Check: With the control knob at "OFF," push and turn the knob slowly counter-clockwise; a blue spark should be visible at the igniter tip.
  • Cooking Grate Cleaning: After cooking and once cooled, wash with a mild soap and warm water solution using a washcloth or vegetable brush.
  • Annual Housing Cleaning:
    1. Shut off gas supply and disconnect the fuel line.
    2. Remove and clean the cooking grate.
    3. Cover the gas orifice with aluminum foil.
    4. Brush and wash the inside of the housing with mild soap and water, then rinse and dry.
    5. Remove aluminum foil and check the orifice for obstructions.
    6. Check the igniter.
    7. Replace the cooking grate.
    8. Reconnect to the gas source and observe burner flame.
    • Important: Do not line the bottom of the housing with aluminum foil, sand, or other grease-absorbent substances, as this can cause a fire.
  • Stainless Steel Cleaning and Maintenance: Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the protective chromium oxide layer and prevent corrosion, especially in environments with chlorine, bromine, fertilizers, or other caustic chemicals.
  • Troubleshooting: If the side burner fails to operate, check for gas supply/connections, burner tube misalignment, obstructions in the gas line or orifice, and igniter misalignment. Wait five minutes before re-igniting if the burner is hot.
  • Parts Ordering: Model number and serial number are located on the shipping box and the front left side of the unit's data sticker. Refer to the parts list and exploded view illustration for identification. Bull provides regional suppliers for parts orders.
