Overview

The Burmester 948 is a high-end power conditioner designed to enhance the audio quality of hi-fi systems by isolating them from power line noises. It incorporates several advanced features to ensure optimal performance and protection for connected audio components.

Function Description

The primary function of the Burmester 948 is to provide complete isolation for a hi-fi system from both high and low-frequency power line noises. This is achieved through its active DC compensation, a patented technology that effectively eliminates low-frequency line noise. Such noise typically causes transformer hum and can significantly impair sound quality. By removing these disturbances, the 948 ensures a cleaner and more transparent power supply to your audio equipment, leading to an improved listening experience.

The device is equipped with eight AC outlets, divided into four groups, to connect various hi-fi components. These outlets are categorized into four filtered and four unfiltered outputs, allowing for flexible power distribution based on the specific needs of your audio setup. Furthermore, the 948 features two separate power filters, enabling the user to keep the power supplies for digital and analogue components distinct. This separation helps prevent interference between different types of devices, further enhancing sound purity.

Beyond noise reduction, the Burmester 948 offers comprehensive system control and protection features. It allows for remote switching of the entire hi-fi system, providing convenience and integration with other Burmester components. The system's star-shaped earthing design offers effective protection against earth loops, which can introduce unwanted noise and hum. An extremely robust additional equipotential bonding conductor ensures optimum earthing, contributing to both safety and performance.

For protection against power fluctuations, the 948 includes highly effective overvoltage protection. This safeguards both the power conditioner itself and all connected devices from power surges, which can cause significant damage to sensitive audio equipment. The device also features a switching display that provides real-time information on the current mains voltage or the DC component present in the mains grid, allowing users to monitor power conditions.

In terms of power consumption and output, the 948 is designed for efficiency and high performance:

  • Standby power: < 1 W
  • Power when on: 10 W

The device is available in different nominal voltage ranges and models to accommodate various international power standards:

948-230-F (Plug-F):

  • Nominal Voltage: 220-230 V~, 50/60 Hz
  • Maximum power output: 3,300 W
  • Maximum power consumption: 3,500 W

948-230-G (Plug-G):

  • Nominal Voltage: 220-230 V~, 50/60 Hz
  • Maximum power output: 2,600 W
  • Maximum power consumption: 2,800 W

948-120-B (Plug B):

  • Nominal Voltage: 110-120 V~, 50/60 Hz
  • Maximum power output: 1,550 W
  • Maximum power consumption: 1,800 W

948-100-B (Plug B):

  • Nominal Voltage: 100 V~, 50/60 Hz
  • Maximum power output: 1,300 W
  • Maximum power consumption: 1,500 W

The maximum output per AC outlet must not exceed 2,000 W @ 230 V, 1,550 W @ 120 V, and 1,300 W @ 100 V. The total output for all connected devices must not exceed the maximum power output specified for the respective model.

Usage Features

The Burmester 948 is intended for use in home audio systems and is designed for straightforward operation. All connection terminals are located on the rear of the device, while operating controls are on the front panel, with the exception of the AC mains switch.

Connecting the Device:

Before connecting, ensure the AC mains switch (13) is set to OFF. Connect the power cable's device plug to the AC input terminal (14) and then plug the mains plug into a wall outlet. For optimal listening, connect the side of the mains plug marked with a dot to the 'hot' phase of the wall outlet, which is also marked on the 948's AC outlets. An equipotential bonding conductor is required for safe operation and discharge of overvoltages; it connects to the 948's earth connection (20) and then to a wall outlet.

AC Outlets/Filters:

The eight AC outlets are grouped as follows:

  • MAINS OUT 1 (11, 12) (FILTER1): Recommended for preamplifiers, phono preamplifiers, record players, and FM tuners.
  • MAINS OUT 2 (15, 16) (FILTER2): Recommended for digital devices such as CD players, DVD players, digital-to-analogue converters, and digital tuners.
  • MAINS OUT 3 (17, 18) and MAINS OUT 4 (20, 21): These are unfiltered outlets, recommended for all types of amplifiers, including subwoofers. The DC compensation affects all eight AC outlets. For very powerful amplifiers with continuous power consumption over 500 W, it is recommended to connect them directly to a parallel wall outlet. The 948 will still affect this outlet due to its parallel connection.

Operating Controls:

  • AC Mains Switch (13): Located on the rear panel, this switch turns the AC power to the unit on and off. When ON, the transformer is connected, AC outlets are switched on, and the stand-by LED (4) lights up.
  • POWER Button (7): Switches the power conditioner on and off when the AC mains switch is in the ON position. The display (3) lights up when on, and the stand-by LED (4) lights up when in stand-by mode. Always switch off using the POWER button before using the AC mains switch.
  • Conditioner Button (6): Toggles the automatic DC compensation on and off. The conditioner LED (1) indicates when this function is active, and the DC voltage figure on the display (3) resets to zero.
  • AC DC Button (10): Toggles the display (3) between showing mains voltage (AC DC LED (5) off) and the DC component of the mains voltage (AC DC LED (5) on).
  • Display Button (9): Switches the display (3) on and off while all device functions remain active.

Remote Input:

The REMOTE input terminal (19) allows the 948 to be switched on and off remotely from a preamplifier or digital-to-analogue converter. This requires a suitable remote cable, which is not included due to varying length requirements. Devices connected to "SWITCHED" AC outlets will turn on simultaneously with the power conditioner.

Error Protection:

The 948 includes various protection circuits.

  • Overheating: If the operating temperature exceeds the maximum permissible limit, the overheating protection automatically switches off DC compensation. The TEMP LED (8) will light up, and the conditioner LED (1) will go out. DC compensation can be reactivated by pressing the conditioner button (6) once the unit has cooled.
  • Overvoltage Protection: Contains overvoltage elements that restrict overvoltages with peak surges of up to 20,000 A.

Permissible Operating Conditions:

  • Maximum altitude: 2000 m
  • Humidity: < 50%
  • Temperature range: 20-30°C
