Overview

The CENTER 232 Clamp Meter is a versatile instrument designed for electrical measurements, offering a range of functions for both AC and DC systems. It is a handheld device, characterized by its clamp design, which allows for non-invasive current measurement.

Function Description:

The primary function of the CENTER 232 is to measure current, voltage, resistance, continuity, and power (Watt). It is an AC/DC True RMS clamp meter, meaning it can accurately measure both alternating current/voltage and direct current/voltage, and its True RMS capability ensures accurate readings even for non-sinusoidal waveforms.

For current measurement, the device supports both AC (ACA) and DC (DCA) current ranges. To measure current, the user opens the clamp by pressing the jaw-opening handle and inserts the cable to be measured into the jaw. For DC current, a "ZERO" button is available to null the reading before measurement, ensuring accuracy.

Voltage measurement is possible for both AC (ACV) and DC (DCV) ranges. This involves connecting the red test lead to the "+" terminal and the black test lead to the "COM" terminal, then touching the test lead tips to the circuit where the voltage is to be measured.

The meter also performs resistance measurement and continuity tests. For these functions, the power line of the system must be disconnected. The test leads are connected to the "+" and "COM" terminals, and their tips are applied to the points where resistance is needed. If the resistance is below 100 Ω, a beeper will sound, indicating continuity.

Power measurement (KW) is another key feature. Similar to current measurement, the clamp is opened and the cable inserted, while test leads are connected to measure voltage, allowing the device to calculate and display the power.

Usage Features:

The CENTER 232 is designed with several features to enhance usability and accuracy:

  • Digital Display: It features a 4-digit LCD display with a maximum reading of 9999, providing clear and precise measurement values.
  • Auto Ranging: The meter automatically adjusts its range based on the input signal, simplifying operation.
  • Polarity Indication: A "-" symbol is displayed when a negative signal is applied to the input.
  • Overload Indication: "OL" is displayed if the input signal exceeds the measuring limit, alerting the user to potential issues.
  • Low Battery Indication: A battery symbol appears on the LCD when the battery voltage drops below the required operating range, prompting the user to change batteries.
  • Auto Power Off: To conserve battery life, the meter automatically powers off after 30 minutes of inactivity (no button presses or rotary switch operations). This feature can be deactivated by pressing and holding the "HOLD" button while powering up the clamp.
  • Data Hold Function: Users can freeze the current reading on the display by pressing the "HOLD" button, which can be released by pressing it again. This is particularly useful when readings are difficult to observe directly.
  • Peak Hold Function: The meter includes a 10ms peak hold function for ACA, ACV, DCA, and DCV ranges. Pressing the "PEAK" button activates this mode, capturing and holding the peak value, and pressing it again exits the mode.
  • Back Light Function: A "Back Light" button controls the display backlight, which can be turned on or off. The backlight also automatically turns off after 30 seconds of inactivity.
  • ZERO Function: The "ZERO" button allows users to set the current reading as the zero reference, displaying relative values. Pressing it again returns the meter to normal operation.
  • Safety Features: The device is rated 600V CATIII 600A, indicating its suitability for measurements in Category III environments up to 600V. It also includes a safety protection ring and clear warnings regarding maximum voltage and proper usage.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and accuracy of the CENTER 232:

  • Battery Changing: When the low battery symbol appears, the batteries should be replaced. The process involves switching the main dial to "OFF," disconnecting test leads, opening the back cover with a screwdriver, replacing the old 1.5V (AAA Size) batteries with new ones, and then re-fastening the back cover.
  • Storage: If the meter will not be used for an extended period, the batteries should be removed to prevent leakage. The device should be stored in an environment that is not subject to high temperatures or humidity.
  • Cleaning: The case of the meter should be periodically wiped with a dry cloth. Abrasives or solvents should not be used, as they can damage the instrument.
  • Accuracy Tip: For more accurate current measurements, the cable should be kept at the center of the clamp.
  • Servicing: Any repairs or servicing not covered in the manual should only be performed by qualified personnel to ensure the meter's integrity and safety.
  • Safety Precaution: Before opening the meter for any reason, both test leads must be disconnected, and the meter should never be used with the cover open. When handling the internal components, care should be taken to avoid contamination or static damage by not touching the circuit board without proper static protection.
