A mandrel is a shank with a threaded or screw
head, which are required when you use
sanding bands. The mandrel is a per manent
shank, allowing you to replace only the worn
head when necessary, thus saving the
expense of replacing the shaft each time.

The drum sander, a drum which fits into the tool
and makes it possible to shape wood, smooth
fiberglass, sand inside curves and other diffi cult
places, and other sanding jobs. You replace the
sanding bands on the drum as they become
worn and lose their grit. Bands come in fine,
medium and coarse grades.
