9.11 NEMA Codes
See also IP Codes. The types of protection for enclosure according to the standards of NEMA (National Electrical
Manufacturing Association) are in common use in the USA and Canada (Publication No. 250 Enclosures for Electrical
Equipment 1000 Volts Maximum). In comparison with the types of protection of the IEC (IP Codes) the Nema Codes
cover additional influences such as installation location, corrosion, icing up and hail.
Code Type of protection Location
1 Against accidental (hand) contact with energized equipment. inside
2 Against limited amounts of falling dirt and water. inside
3 Against ingress of windblown dust, rain and hail. No damage from
external formation of ice on the enclosure.
inside
3R Against ingress of rain and hail. No damage from external formation of
ice on the enclosure.
inside
3S Against ingress of hail as well as windblown dust and rain. External
mechanisms remain operable when ice laden.
inside
4 Against falling rain, splashing water and hose-directed water. No damage
from external formation of ice on the enclosure.

4X Against falling rain, splashing water and hose-directed water. No damage
from external formation of ice on the enclosure. Corrosion protection.

5 Against dust, falling dirt and dripping non-corrosive liquids. inside
6 Against ingress of dust and hose – directed water and against water
during occasional temporary submersion at a limited depth. No damage
from external formation of ice on the enclosure.

NEMA Codes have their approximate equivalents – as shown clearly in the table below, this is not a 1:1
correspondence!!!
– in the IP protection codes. Since the requirements for the types of protection according to NEMA
meet, or are higher than, the IP types of protection, the table cannot be used to convert the NEMA codes to
corresponding IEC protection codes.
