Usage Features

The device is designed for easy integration and operation within industrial systems. It is crucial to adhere to the specified installation guidelines to ensure safe and reliable performance.

Installation:

  • Mechanical Connection: The fan must be securely mounted, ensuring no strain on the fastening points. It is important to avoid subjecting the fan to force or excessive vibration from the installation. If connected to air ducts, vibration isolation is recommended. When unpacking, care must be taken due to the device's weight (>25 kg), requiring suitable hoisting equipment. Blades should not be subjected to load or deformed.
  • Electrical Connection: Always connect the protective earth first. Use cables that meet specified installation regulations for voltage, current, insulation material, and capacity. Cables should be routed to prevent contact with rotating parts. The terminal box requires careful wiring, ensuring proper stripping lengths and secure connections. Cable glands must be sealed, and cables should be routed in a U-shaped loop (especially for fans installed lying flat) to prevent moisture penetration into the terminal box. For upright installations, cable glands should be at the bottom, and cables routed downward.
  • Fuses: Supply cable cross-sections and corresponding fuses (e.g., 3/PE AC 380-480 VAC: 16A VDE/15A UL with C16A breaker for 1.5 mm² / AWG 16) are specified to ensure proper line protection.
  • Reactive Currents: Due to the integrated EMC filter, reactive currents may be measured in the supply line even at standstill, typically < 250 mA, with effective power < 5 W.
  • Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB): If an RCD is required, only AC/DC-sensitive devices (Type B or B+) are permissible. A trip threshold of 300 mA and delayed tripping (super-resistant, characteristic K) are recommended to prevent nuisance tripping from pulsed charging currents.
  • Locked-Rotor Protection: The starting current (LRA) is equal to or less than the nominal current (FLA) due to integrated locked-rotor protection.

Operation:

  • Intended Use: The device is exclusively for conveying air. Any other use, such as operating in an unbalanced state, with severe vibration, in explosive atmospheres, as a safety component, or with disassembled protective devices, is prohibited.
  • Control: The device can be controlled via its analog or digital inputs. Factory settings include PWM control, with adjustable max/min PWM values and positive (heating) direction of action for analog control.
  • Safety: The device includes integrated protective functions that automatically switch off the motor in case of rotor position detection error, blocked rotor, line undervoltage, or phase failure. An automatic restart follows once the fault condition is cleared.
  • Sound Pressure Level: Depending on installation and operating conditions, the sound pressure level may exceed 70 dB(A), requiring appropriate technical safety measures and hearing protection for operating personnel.
  • Hot Surface: The electronics housing can become hot, requiring protection against accidental contact.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the device's longevity and reliable operation.

General Maintenance:

  • Cleaning: The device should be cleaned regularly (at least every 6 months) using a clean, dry cloth. Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents, solvents, or sharp-edged objects. Ensure that no weight clips are removed during cleaning to prevent imbalance.
  • Safety Inspection: Regular visual inspections (at least every 6 months) are recommended for various components:
    • Protective cover/protection for damage or damage to blades and housing: Visual inspection, replace if damaged.
    • Insulation of cables for damage: Visual inspection, replace cables.
    • Tightness of cable gland: Visual inspection, retighten or replace if damaged.
    • Condensation drainage holes for clogging: Visual inspection, open holes if necessary.
    • Welds for crack formation: Visual inspection, replace device.
    • Abnormal bearing noise: Acoustic inspection, replace device.
  • Bearing Maintenance: The fan is equipped with maintenance-free ball bearings. However, if abnormal bearing noise is detected, the device should be replaced.
  • Storage: Store the device in a dry, vibration-free environment, in its original packaging, protected from environmental effects and dirt. It is recommended not to store for longer than one year to ensure optimal service life.
  • Extended Downtime: If the device is out of use for over four months, it is recommended to switch it on for at least three hours at full speed to evaporate condensation and move the bearings.

Troubleshooting and Remedies:

  • Impeller not running smoothly: Possible cause is imbalance in rotating parts. Remedy involves cleaning the device; if imbalance persists, replace it.
  • Motor not turning: Possible cause is mechanical blockage. Remedy involves switching off, isolating from supply, and removing the blockage.
  • Line voltage faulty: Check line voltage, isolate from supply. The device restarts automatically after the line voltage returns to permitted values.
  • Faulty connection: Isolate from supply, check connection, see connection diagram.
  • Broken motor winding: Replace device.
  • Deficient cooling: Improve cooling. The device cools down to reset, or restart after at least 25 s.
  • Ambient temperature too high: Reduce ambient temperature. The device cools down to reset, or restart after at least 25 s.
  • Impermissible point of operation (e.g., back pressure too high): Correct the operating point. The device cools down to reset, or restart after at least 25 s.

Disposal:

  • ebm-papst prioritizes environmental protection and resource preservation. The device should be disassembled by qualified personnel into suitable components for disposal, following standard procedures for motors.
  • Component Separation: Components are mostly made of steel, copper, aluminum, and plastic. Metallic materials are generally recyclable. Separate components into categories: steel and iron, aluminum, non-ferrous metal (e.g., motor windings), plastics, insulating materials, cables and wires, and electronic scrap (e.g., circuit boards).
  • Ferrite magnets can be disposed of like normal iron and steel.
  • Always observe applicable country-specific legal regulations for waste disposal. Contact ebm-papst for further disposal questions.
