Do you have a question about the ebm-papst S4D350-AN08-50 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the S4D350-AN08-50 device, an ebm-papst Mulfingen GmbH & Co. KG product, intended for conveying air as a built-in component. It is designed for use in power systems with grounded neutral (TN/TT power systems) and operates within an ambient air pressure range of 800 mbar to 1050 mbar. The device is suitable for operation within specified ambient temperature ranges, which are detailed in the technical specifications. Proper use requires adherence to all protective devices and the operating instructions.

Function Description

The S4D350-AN08-50 is a three-phase external rotor motor fan, primarily designed for air conveying applications. Its core function involves moving air efficiently, making it suitable for integration into various customer equipment and systems. The fan operates with an impeller and rotor system, which, when powered, creates an airflow in the direction indicated as "V" on the product drawing. The direction of rotation is counterclockwise when viewed toward the rotor. The device is a built-in component, meaning it is integrated into a larger system, and the responsibility for adequate safeguarding lies with the owner of the system.

Usage Features

  • Installation: The device is designed for mechanical connection by securing it with screws of strength class 8.8. It is crucial to ensure stress-free attachment to the substructure and secure positioning until all fastening screws are tightened. The fan must not be strained on fastening.
  • Electrical Connection: Connection to a power supply requires careful attention to safety. A protective earth connection must be established first. Only cables meeting specified installation regulations for voltage, current, insulation material, and capacity should be used. Cables should be routed to prevent contact with rotating parts. The device is a built-in component and lacks a disconnecting switch, so it must be connected to circuits that can be switched off with an all-pole disconnection switch.
  • Terminal Box: Wires are connected within a terminal box. The cable gland must be sealed, and connections must be strain-free. Cable routing should ideally form a U-shaped loop to prevent water ingress, especially for fans installed lying flat. For upright installations, cable glands should be at the bottom, and cables routed downward.
  • Motor Protection: The device is supplied without automatic overheating protection. For versions without a thermal overload protector, a suitable motor protection switch must be installed externally to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards.
  • Voltage Control: If speed control is implemented via transformers or electronic voltage regulators (e.g., phase control), current overshoots, noise, and vibration may occur. The heating-up of the motor under voltage control must be checked by the customer after installation.
  • Variable Frequency Drive: For operation with variable frequency drives, sinusoidal filters (working on all poles) must be installed between the drive and the motor. These filters protect against high-voltage transients and harmful bearing currents. The motor's heating-up must be checked by the customer.
  • Intended Use Limitations: The device is not intended for operation in an unbalanced state, with severe vibration, in medical life-sustaining equipment, for conveying solids or abrasive/corrosive particles (unless specifically designed), with high dust content, near flammable materials, in explosive atmospheres, or as a safety component. Any modifications or operation with disassembled protective devices are prohibited.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning is essential for proper operation and to prevent soiling, which can cause overheating and vibration, shortening the fan's service life. Cleaning should only be performed when the fan is not in motion, with the power supply interrupted and secured against renewed switch-on. Dry cleaning, such as with compressed air, is the preferred method. Aggressive cleaning agents, water jets, high-pressure cleaners, acids, alkalis, solvents, or sharp-edged objects must not be used. All cleaning agents must be completely removed.
  • Safety Inspection: Regular safety inspections are recommended every 6 months. This includes:
    • Contact protection cover: Visual inspection for intactness or damage.
    • Device for damage to blades and housing: Visual inspection.
    • Fastening the cables and protective earth terminal: Visual inspection to ensure they are fastened.
    • Insulation of cables: Visual inspection for damage.
    • Tightness of cable gland: Visual inspection.
    • Condensation drainage holes: Visual inspection for clogging.
    • Welds: Visual inspection for crack formation.
    • Abnormal bearing noise: Acoustic check.
    • Loose connections and defective cables should be replaced immediately.
  • Bearing Lifetime: The fan is equipped with maintenance-free ball bearings designed for a service life of 40,000 hours. If bearing replacement becomes necessary after this period, ebm-papst should be contacted.
  • Vibration Management: Low-vibration operation must be ensured across the entire speed control range. Severe vibration can indicate inexpert handling, transport damage, imbalance, or structural resonance. Speed ranges with excessively high vibration levels should be identified during commissioning and either avoided or remedied.
  • Storage: If the device is out of use for some time, it is recommended to switch it on for at least two hours to evaporate any condensation and move the bearings.
  • Disposal: The product components are mostly steel, copper, aluminum, and plastic, which are generally recyclable. Components should be separated into categories (steel and iron, aluminum, non-ferrous metal, plastics, insulating materials, cables and wires, electronic scrap) for proper disposal. Ferrite magnets can be disposed of like normal iron and steel. Country-specific legal regulations for disposal must always be observed. Disassembly should be performed or supervised by qualified personnel.
