Overview

This document describes the Eemax "Series-Two" Electric Instantaneous Water Heaters, specifically models EX120 T, TC, T2, operating at 240/208 V. It serves as an installation guide and owner's manual, emphasizing safety, proper installation, and maintenance for optimal performance and energy savings.

Function Description:

The Eemax "Series-Two" heater is designed to provide instantaneous hot water for domestic use. It takes in cold water and heats it to temperatures suitable for normal household applications, up to a maximum of 140°F (60°C). The unit is an electric instantaneous water heater, meaning it heats water on demand rather than storing it, which contributes to energy efficiency. It operates on a dedicated independent circuit, using correctly rated wires and a circuit breaker. The heater's operation is dependent on water flow; it will not energize without sufficient water flow, and it modulates power to achieve the desired temperature.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models Covered: EX120 T, TC, T2
  • Voltage: 240/208 V
  • Pipe Connections: 3/4" NPT fittings for both inlet and outlet.
  • Output/kW (EX120): 11.5 kW
  • Amperage (EX120): 47.9 Amps at 240V
  • Voltage Output Ratios:
    • 208 volts: 0.75 output ratio
    • 220 volts: 0.84 output ratio
    • 240 volts: 1.0 output ratio
  • Minimum Flow Rate for Operation:
    • T, TC Models: 0.75 gpm
    • T2, P2 Models: 1.5 gpm
  • Maximum Temperature: Approximately 140°F (60°C)
  • Electrical Circuit: Requires one dedicated independent circuit with UL listed 2 conductor and ground core copper wire cable, protected by one independent correctly rated Double Pole breaker (208, 220, 240 V).
  • Element Resistance: Should be under 10 ohms for proper functioning.

Usage Features:

  • Instantaneous Heating: Provides hot water on demand, eliminating the need for a storage tank.
  • Temperature Control (T, TC, T2 Models): Temperature can be adjusted using a temperature adjustment screw. The indicator light pulses when the unit is modulating power to maintain the set temperature. Increasing water flow above the thermostatic control's effective rate will reduce water temperature.
  • Temperature Control (P2 Models): Temperature is controlled by adjusting the water flow rate; higher flow rates result in lower water temperatures and vice-versa.
  • Energy Efficiency: Locating the unit as close as possible to the point of use helps optimize performance and energy savings.
  • Indicator Lights: Power indicator lights illuminate when the unit is operating. For T, TC, and T2 models, the light pulses On and Off initially, then stays fully on, and begins to pulsate when the desired temperature is reached and the unit is modulating power.
  • Safety Features: Equipped with an ECO (High Limit Thermostat) that trips if the unit overheats, requiring a manual reset. Grounding the system is critical to prevent electrical shock.

Maintenance Features:

  • Isolation Valves: Installation of full flow ball type isolating valves on both inlet and outlet pipes is recommended to allow the unit to be isolated for maintenance.
  • Element Replacement: A minimum of 8 inches of clearance above the unit is required for easy replacement of the heating element.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting section for common issues such as "No Heat - Indicator Light Off" and "No Heat or Low Temperature with Indicator Light On." This includes checks for electrical supply, water flow, reversed connections, burned out elements, and tripped ECO.
  • ECO Reset: The ECO (High Limit Thermostat) can be reset by pushing a red button on each heater module after turning off the main circuit breaker.
  • Inlet Filter Screen: The inlet filter screen, located in the brass inlet boss, should be checked and cleared of debris if low water flow is suspected.
  • Temperature Adjustment: For T, TC, and T2 models, the thermostat adjustment screw(s) can be turned clockwise in small increments to increase temperature or counter-clockwise to decrease it.
  • Leak Checks: After plumbing, the system should be fully checked for water leaks at all connections.
  • Air Purging: Before commissioning, all hot water outlets must be opened one at a time for a minute or two to ensure continuous water flow, free from "gulping" and visible air pockets, to prevent premature element failure.
  • Technical Support: A toll-free technical service department (1-800-543-6163) is available for assistance with installation or performance issues. Users should have the serial number, model number, and installation date ready when calling.
  • Replacement Parts Diagram: The manual includes a diagram illustrating key replacement parts such as the heater core assembly, ECO, temperature adjustment knob, control boards, and Triac.
