Smocking
Smocking is a delicate, decorative treatment on
children’s clothing or women’s blouses. Choose a
soft, lightweight fabric such as batiste, gingham or
challis. Cut the fabric three times the finished width.
1. Set needle thread tension to 2.5. Use the
straight stitch with the stitch length at 4.0.
2. Sew rows of straight stitches about 13 mm (1/2”)
apart, across the area to be smocked.
3. Tie the threads along one edge. Pull the bobbin
threads to gather the fabric and make the gath-
ers even. Tie the threads at the other end.
4. Turn the stitch selection knob to decorative
stitch. Set needle thread tension to 3.0.
5. Sew the decorative stitch between the straight
stitching lines.
6. Pull out straight stitching lines.
