Overview

The Emaux APS Series Hydrau-Power Plastic Pump is a high-performance, heavy-duty pump designed for swimming pool and seawater applications. It incorporates Emaux's latest pump design technology, offering efficient and low-noise operation.

Function Description:

The APS Series pump is primarily used for circulating water in swimming pools, spas, and other aquatic systems. It is designed to deliver high flow rates, ensuring effective filtration and water movement. The pump is driven by a three-phase electrical motor, making it suitable for demanding applications. Its robust construction with reinforced plastic makes it lightweight and corrosion-resistant, ideal for marine environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

The APS Series includes several models with varying horsepower and flow rates, operating at 380V/50Hz.

  • APS550P: 5.5 HP, 4" / DN 100 connection, 13 L strainer, 2850 RPM. Flow rates range from 95 m³/h at 6m head to 50 m³/h at 16m head. Power: 4 KW, Noise: 72 dB.
  • APS750P: 7.5 HP, 4" / DN 100 connection, 13 L strainer, 2850 RPM. Flow rates range from 130 m³/h at 6m head to 80 m³/h at 16m head. Power: 5.5 KW, Noise: 72 dB.
  • APS1000P: 10 HP, 6" / DN 150 connection, 30 L strainer, 1450 RPM. Flow rates range from 210 m³/h at 8m head to 135 m³/h at 16m head. Power: 7.5 KW, Noise: 68 dB.
  • APS1500P: 15 HP, 6" / DN 150 connection, 30 L strainer, 1450 RPM. Flow rates range from 270 m³/h at 8m head to 210 m³/h at 16m head. Power: 11 KW, Noise: 68 dB.

The pump features ANSI Class 150 and DIN PN10 compatible flange standards for versatile piping system integration. The motor design adheres to IE3 class premium efficiency standards.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The pump should be located as close as possible to the pool or spa to minimize friction loss and maximize efficiency, ideally at least 1.5 meters from pool water and 3 meters according to Canadian code. APS550P and APS750P models have self-priming capacity for in-ground pool applications, while APS1000P and APS1500P should be installed below ground level. A solid, non-vibrating foundation is required, and the pump must be bolted down to reduce noise. Adequate ventilation is crucial to protect the motor from excessive moisture.
  • Piping: Suction piping should be as short and straight as possible, with a diameter no smaller than the pump's inlet. It must be airtight to prevent de-priming and should be independently supported to avoid tension on the pump's flange. Minimizing elbows, valves, and narrow sections reduces head losses and air pocket formation. Each pump should have a dedicated suction tube.
  • Flange Installation: The pre-filter inlet and pump body discharge outlet are flange-type, supporting both ANSI (Class 150) and DIN (PN10) standards. Installation involves placing 8 large bolts from the pipe flange side to the pump, with a 3.2mm gasket in between, and snugging each bolt until a squealing sound indicates proper tightening.
  • Electrical Wiring (3-Phase): The pump requires a licensed or certified electrician for installation to ensure compliance with safety codes. It must be permanently connected to an individual circuit breaker and a Residual Current Device (RCD) or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) with a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30mA. Proper grounding is essential to prevent electrical shock. The pump operates at 380VAC 50Hz (+10% and -6% tolerance).
    • Direct On Line (DOL) Starting: This is the simplest and cheapest starting method, providing the lowest temperature rise during startup. However, starting current can be 3-8 times the full load current, making it less recommended for pumps over 5.5KW in public low voltage mains. A typical DOL starter includes a motor circuit breaker, control unit, protection relay, and single-phase MCB.
    • Star/Delta Starter: Recommended for high-power pumps to manage high starting current surges. It includes a main contactor, thermal overload, motor (3 phase), delta contactor, and star contactor.
    • Variable Frequency Drive (VFD): Allows for better starting and energy saving. Connection involves linking the 3-phase output of the VFD to the pump in either Delta or Star configuration, as per the motor plate.
    • Soft Starter: A low-voltage starter that gradually applies voltage and ramps up to full power, preventing current surges and allowing for a slow stop to eliminate water hammer. It offers smooth acceleration, lower start currents, and consistent performance.
  • Start-Up: Before starting, verify the pump shaft turns freely, check mains voltage, current, and frequency against the nameplate. Never run the pump dry; fill the pre-filter with water first. Always stop the pump and close gate valves in suction and discharge pipes before removing the pre-filter lid. Release all pressure from the pump and piping system. Ensure the suction pipe and inlet are free from obstructions. Check that the lid O-ring and seat areas are clean and lubricated for an airtight seal.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Filter Basket Maintenance: The pre-filter basket should be visually inspected at least once a week. To clean, turn off the pump at the breaker, close inlet and discharge valves, drain water from the pre-filter bottom, release pressurized air by slowly opening lid fasteners, remove clips and lid, take out the basket, remove debris, and rinse. Reinstall the lid, ensuring the O-ring is properly placed, then open valves, turn on power, open the manual air relief valve on the filter, and start the pump. Bleed air until a steady stream of water emerges.
  • Routine Maintenance Schedule: Beyond strainer cleaning, regular checks are necessary:
    • Inspect mechanical parts and screw tightness.
    • Check pump cleanliness every 100 hours of operation or less.
    • Monitor machine and motor temperature for overheating.
    • Check for vibrations.
    • If a fault occurs, stop the machine and contact a technical serviceman.
    • Verify motor current consumption against the nameplate.
  • Winterizing: If temperatures drop below 0°C (35°F), drain water from the pump by removing the two drain plugs. Store the plugs in the pump basket. Cover the motor to protect it from severe weather, but avoid wrapping it in plastic to prevent condensation and rust. If possible, store the pump indoors in a dry location. A qualified service technician should disconnect electrical wiring if the pump is stored indoors. Upon reactivation, ensure all seals and O-rings are in operational condition, regreasing or replacing as needed.

Safety Warnings:

  • Electrical Shock Hazard: Hazardous voltage can cause shock, burns, or death. Installation must be performed by qualified personnel according to national and local electrical codes. Always lock-out/tagout before servicing.
  • Compressed Air Hazard: The system can become pressurized. Always lock out the source and bleed off pressure before servicing. Ensure the pre-filter/filter air relief valve is open and all pressure is relieved before removing the lid.
  • Suction Entrapment Hazard: The pump generates strong suction. Use multiple main drains with compliant suction outlet covers and safety vacuum release systems (SVRS) or other approved safety measures to prevent body, limb, hair, mechanical, or evisceration entrapment. Inspect suction outlets regularly for damage.
  • Hyperthermia: SPA water temperatures exceeding 38°C (104°F) can be injurious to health. Measure water temperature before entering a SPA.
  • Pump Dry Running: Never run the pump dry, as this can damage the mechanical seal and cause leakage.
  • RCD/GFCI Trips: If the RCD/GFCI trips, it indicates a fault. Disconnect the pump and have it serviced by a qualified representative. Test the RCD/GFCI monthly.
