Problem Solution Probable Cause
The pump shuts off and turns on
independent of the switch (trips thermal
overload protector).
CAUTION: The pump may start
unexpectedly. Disconnect the power
supply.
NOTE: Some pumps do not
have thermal load protection
on the motor. Check the pump
specications to determine.
The voltage is incorrect. □ Check all electrical connections for secu-
rity. Have an electrician measure current
in motor leads. If current is within ±20%
of locked rotor Amps, the impeller is
probably locked. If current is 0, overload
may be tripped.
□ Remove power, allow the pump to cool,
then recheck the current.
There is excessive inow or the pump is not
properly sized for the application.
Recheck all sizing calculations to determine
proper pump size.
The impeller is jammed, loose on the shaft,
worn or damaged.
The impeller cavity or inlet is plugged.
□ Check the impeller for freedom of opera-
tion, security, and condition.
□ Clean the impeller cavity and inlet of any
obstruction.
The water temperature is excessive (internal
protection only).
Check the pump temperature limits and uid
temperature.
The pump operates noisily or vibrates
excessively.
The bearings are worn and the motor shaft
is bent.
The bearings or motor shaft are defective.
There is debris in the impeller cavity or the
impeller is broken.
□ Check the impeller for freedom of opera-
tion, security, and condition.
□ Clean the impeller cavity and inlet for
any obstruction.
The pump is running backwards. Check rotation. If the power supply is three-
phase, reverse any two of the three power
supply leads to ensure proper impeller
rotation.
Piping attachments to the building structure
are too rigid or too loose.
Replace a portion of the discharge pipe with
exible connector.
