Overview

The Falcon Electric, Inc. FN2 Series is a line of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems designed to provide stable, regulated, and transient-free pure sine wave AC power for critical devices. These UPS units are available in tower models with nominal power ratings of 4500, 6000, 8000, and 10000 volt-amperes (VA).

Function Description:

The FN2 Series UPS operates on a true on-line architecture, meaning it continuously regenerates new AC power, offering the highest level of protection against severe power fluctuations. It converts incoming AC to DC and then back to AC, ensuring a constant and clean power supply to connected equipment. Key components include an input EMI filter for electromagnetic interference protection, a rectifier and DC boost for AC-to-DC conversion and power factor correction, an inverter (Neutral Point Clamped type) for DC-to-AC conversion, and an output EMI filter to eliminate magnetic interference. The system also incorporates a charger for its internal batteries and supports external battery banks for extended backup time. An auto bypass loop allows the UPS to switch the load to bypass power in case of overload or internal abnormality.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Ratings: 4500 VA, 6000 VA, 8000 VA, 10000 VA.
  • Output Waveform: Pure sine wave.
  • Power Factor: Unity (VA = W).
  • Topology: 20 kHz PWM sine wave.
  • Battery Type: Sealed, lead-acid batteries (NP7.2-12 (7Ah) or NPW45-12 (9Ah)).
  • Operating Temperature Range: 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F). Ideal for battery life: 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • Storage Temperature Range: -10°C to 40°C (14°F to 104°F).
  • Humidity: 10% to 90% relative humidity, non-condensing.
  • Altitude: Up to 3280 ft (1000 m).
  • Input/Output Wiring: Hard-wired terminal blocks supporting various voltage configurations (208V, 240V, 208V/120V, 240V/120V, 120V).
  • Maximum Terminal Current: 36 Amps RMS for 4.5 to 6kVA, 65 Amps RMS for 8 to 10kVA.
  • Wire Recommendations (Copper, 75°C/90°C):
    • 4.5kVA: Input #10 AWG (TRQ: 12 IN LB), Output #10 AWG (TRQ: 12 IN LB).
    • 6kVA: Input #8 AWG (TRQ: 12 IN LB), Output #8 AWG (TRQ: 12 IN LB).
    • 8kVA: Input #6 AWG (TRQ: 18 IN LB), Output #8 AWG (TRQ: 10 IN LB).
    • 10kVA: Input #4 AWG (TRQ: 18 IN LB), Output #6 AWG (TRQ: 10 IN LB).
  • Communication Ports: USB, RS232, CAN Bus (for parallel function), Communication Option Slots (for Dry Contact Relay Card).
  • Safety Features: Utility Input Breaker (NFB), Bypass Input Breaker (for dual input models), Thermal breaker (CB3) for load protection, Emergency Power Off (E.P.O.) normally open contact.

Usage Features:

  • Precision Output Voltage & Frequency: Ensures stable power delivery.
  • Superior Protection: Offers robust brownout, surge, and transient protection.
  • Parallel / N+1 Operation: Up to four FN2 Series UPSs of the same capacity can be connected in parallel to provide up to 24kVA (6kVA models) or 40kVA (10kVA models) capacity. N+1 redundancy protects critical equipment in case of a single UPS failure and allows for expandable power consumption.
  • Constant Frequency Mode (Optional): Can operate at a fixed 50Hz or 60Hz output frequency, independent of the input frequency. In this mode, the UPS capacity is de-rated to 75%, and parallel/N+1 operation is not available. This feature requires internal bypass line disabling.
  • Hot-Swappable Battery Packs: Allows for battery replacement without interrupting power to the load.
  • Digitalized Control Circuitry: Enables functionality upgrades and enhanced remote control and monitoring capabilities.
  • LCD Display: Provides comprehensive information on UPS status, input/output voltage and frequency, load percentage, battery voltage, internal temperature, and various alarms/faults. Icons indicate N+1 operation, utility input status, bypass input status, ECO mode, and alarm/fault conditions.
  • User Interface Buttons: Include "UPS On / Alarm Silence," "Previous Page / Change Setting," "Confirm (Enter)," "Next Page," "Off," and "Special Functions" for system control and configuration.
  • Communication Software: Bundled with the UPS, compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, VISTA, Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows 10 for remote monitoring.
  • Dry Contact Relay Card (Optional): Provides relay outputs for various UPS status indications (Bypass mode, Utility Abnormal, Utility Normal, Inverter On, Battery Low, Battery Abnormal, UPS Alarm) and a shutdown function.
  • Maintenance Bypass Switch (MBS): Allows the UPS to be bypassed for maintenance without interrupting power to the load, connecting the load directly to utility power.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: Detailed instructions for replacing hot-swappable battery packs are provided. Users are warned to follow safety precautions related to high energy hazards, conductive jewelry, and not disposing of batteries in fire or opening/mutilating them.
  • Battery Storage Recommendations: For extended storage, batteries should be charged for 12 hours every 3 months (or monthly if ambient temperature is above 25°C/77°F) to maximize life and retain capacity.
  • Battery Service Life Information: A table provides typical battery service life during float/trickle charge at different ambient temperatures, emphasizing the impact of temperature on battery longevity.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Includes a list of error codes (e.g., Battery weak or dead, Output short circuit, Inverter over-current, UPS over-temperature, Fan error, Parallel communication error) and corresponding solutions.
  • Self-Test Function: The UPS performs an automatic self-test during startup and can also conduct a 10-second battery test to check battery health.
  • Technical Support: Falcon Electric, Inc. provides technical support via phone, fax, and email, requiring UPS model, serial number, and purchase date for assistance.
  • RMA Procedure: A Return Material Authorization (RMA) number is required for returning defective products, emphasizing the use of original shipping containers to prevent shipping damage.
  • Warranty: A two-year limited warranty for domestic use (50 states and Canada) and one year for international destinations, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Exclusions include improper installation, misuse, unauthorized repairs, acts outside Falcon's control, and normal wear and tear. The warranty is void if used with life support equipment, factory seal is broken, or battery discharges below minimum cutoff.
