While your vehicle is in motion, the combination lap and
shoulder belt adjusts to your movement. However,
if
you
brake hard, corner hard or
if
your vehicle receives an impact,
the lap and shoulder belt locks and prevents you from moving.
To fasten the belt, pull the lap/shoulder belt from the extractor
so that the shoulder portion
of
the belt crosses your shoulder
and chest. Insert the belt tongue into the proper buckle until
you hear a snap and feel
it
latch.
To
tighten the lap portion
of
the belt, pull up on the shoulder
belt until it fits you snugly. The belt should rest
as
low on your
hips as possible.
Check your safety belt system periodically to make sure that it
works properly and isn't damaged.
If
the webbing shows any
wear, nicks or cuts, have it examined by a qualified technician
to determine
if
replacement is necessary. Always have your
safety belt system checked after a collision.
In most states, you are required by law to use safety restraints
for children.
If
small children (less than four years old, and
under
40 pounds ride in your vehicle, you must put them in
safety seats that are made specially for children. Safety belts
alone do not provide maximum protection for these children.
Check your local and state laws for specific requirements.
Safety belts and seats can become hot in a vehicle that has
been closed up in sunny weather, and could burn a small child.
Check seat covers and buckles before you place a child any-
where near them.
Children who are too large for child safety seats should
always wear safety belts.
