6. Remove traction drive belt (E).
Installation
1. Install new traction drive belt (E).
2. Connect tension spring (D) to idler pulley
bolt (C). Install nut (B) and tighten until
1-2 threads of bolt are visible. Do not
overtighten.
3. From above unit tighten flange nut (A)
4. Install mower deck drive belt.
5. Install mower deck center belt guard.
SERVICE MOWER
Adjusting Deck Belt Tension
(Figure 27)
1. Park unit safely. See Using the Parking
Brake on page 13.
2. Remove mower center belt cover.
3. Measure the length of the idler arm
tension spring (A) between the inside
edges of both end hooks. Length should
be:
• 988146: 4-5/8 in. ± 1/8 in. (11.7 cm ± 3
mm).
• 988147, 148: 4-7/16 in. ± 1/8 in. (11.1
mm ± 3 mm).
4. Loosen the jam nut (B) and adjust the
threaded rod until the proper spring
length is obtained.
5. Tighten the jam nut.
6. Replace mower center belt cover.
Removing and Installing Mower Deck
Drive Belt (988146)
1. Park unit safely. See Using the Parking
Brake on page 13.
2. Remove mower deck center belt cover.
3. Loosen nyloc hex nut (A) on top of idler
pulley (B) until belt will fit between pulley
and belt guide. The hex nut does not
need to be completely removed.
4. Loosen the jam nut (C) and loosen the
threaded rod until all spring (D) tension
is removed from the belt (E).
