Overview

This document is an owner's manual for a Greenworks 16" Electric Lawn Mower, model 25142. It provides comprehensive information on the mower's function, usage, and maintenance, ensuring safe and effective operation.

The Greenworks 16" Electric Lawn Mower is designed for residential lawn care, offering a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline-powered mowers. Its primary function is to cut grass, with features that allow for mulching or collecting clippings in a rear bag. The electric motor ensures quieter operation and eliminates the need for fuel, oil changes, and spark plug maintenance, making it a low-emission tool.

For usage, the mower is equipped with a bail switch and a start button. To begin operation, the user must press and hold the start button, then pull the bail switch upward to the handle, and finally release the button. To stop the motor, the bail switch is simply released. A crucial safety feature is that the blade will stop rotating within 3 seconds of releasing the bail switch. The manual emphasizes the importance of inspecting the cutting area before operation to remove any stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys, or other debris that could be thrown by the rotating blades, causing potential injury.

The mower's handle is designed for user comfort and adjustability. It can be unfolded and adjusted to the operator's preferred height using cam locks on both sides of the upper and lower handles. This ergonomic design aims to reduce user fatigue during operation. For storage, the handle can be folded away completely, making the mower more compact and easier to store in smaller spaces. The manual provides clear instructions on how to unlock the cam locks, fold the upper handle down, and then fold the lower handle forward, ensuring the power cord is not bent or kinked in the process.

Connecting the mower to a power source requires an extension cord. The manual specifies the appropriate AWG (American Wire Gauge) ratings for different extension cord lengths: 16 AWG for a 50' (15 m) cord, 14 AWG for a 100' (30 m) cord, and 12 AWG for a 150' (45 m) cord. It stresses the use of a CSA or equivalent agency-listed extension cord approved for outdoor use. The mower is equipped with a polarized plug, which must be used with a polarized extension cord to reduce the risk of electric shock. A cord retainer is integrated into the design to prevent the extension cord from disconnecting from the mower's power cord during use. The user is instructed to form a tight loop with the extension cord, push it through the bottom hole of the retainer, and then slide it over the retaining clip until the cord is secured.

The cutting height of the mower is adjustable, allowing users to customize the grass length according to their lawn's needs and seasonal conditions. The manual recommends a cutting height of 1 1/2" to 2" (3.8 to 5 cm) during cool months and 2" to 3 1/2" (5 to 8.3 cm) during hot months. To adjust the blade height, the user grasps the height adjustment lever and moves it toward the back of the mower to raise the blade or toward the front to lower it.

The mower offers two primary functions: mulching and rear bagging. For mulching, a mulching plug is installed. To remove it for bagging, the chute cover is lifted, and the mulching plug is pulled out using its handle. The mulching plug is inserted at an angle, requiring some force to remove. When the mulching plug is removed, the grass catcher bag can be installed. The grass catcher bag is attached by lifting the chute cover and seating the hooks on the grass catcher frame into the slots in the handle bracket. The manual advises re-installing the mulching plug when the grass catcher bag is removed.

Operating the mower on slopes requires extreme caution. The manual includes a slope gauge and explicitly warns against mowing slopes with an angle greater than 15°. It instructs users to mow across the face of a slope, never up and down, and to exercise extreme caution when changing direction. Users are also advised to watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps that could cause a slip or trip, and to ensure firm footing at all times. If balance is lost, the bail switch should be released immediately. Wet or damp grass should not be mowed due to unstable footing.

Maintenance features are crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the mower. The manual provides detailed instructions for cleaning and blade replacement. The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned after each use to prevent grass clippings, leaves, dirt, and other debris from accumulating, which can cause rust and corrosion. Any buildup around the motor cover should be removed with a dry cloth, avoiding water. If debris builds up on the underside of the unit, the motor should be stopped, the power supply disconnected, and the mower tilted to scrape it clean.

Replacing the cutting blade is a key maintenance task. The manual emphasizes wearing heavy gloves and/or wrapping the cutting edges with rags to protect hands. Only GREENWORKS replacement blades should be used. Before replacing the blade, the mower must be turned off, unplugged, and the blade allowed to come to a complete stop. A block of wood is wedged between the blade and the mower deck to prevent the blade from turning while the blade nut is loosened with a 15-mm wrench or socket. The blade nut, square washer, insulator washer, and blade are removed in a specific order. When re-installing, the blade's cutting edges must face the ground, and the components are assembled in the reverse order, ensuring the blade nut is tightened clockwise. The manual also advises checking the blade and motor mounting bolts frequently for proper tightness and visually inspecting the blade for damage such as bends, cracks, or wear. Excessive vibration during operation is an indicator of damage, requiring immediate inspection and repair.

For storage, the mower should be cleaned, the power cord disconnected, and the blade inspected/sharpened if needed. It should be stored in a dry, clean area, away from corrosive materials like fertilizer and rock salt. The extension cord should be wiped clean and wound in equal loops to prevent tangling. The mower should be stored indoors in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children, and not covered with a solid plastic sheet, as plastic coverings can trap moisture and cause corrosion.

Safety information is paramount throughout the manual. It highlights the importance of reading all instructions carefully, becoming familiar with controls, and knowing how to stop the mower and disengage power in an emergency. Children under 14 are not permitted to operate the mower, and those 14 and older must be trained and supervised by a parent. Bystanders, especially children and pets, must be kept at least 50' (15 m) away from the mower during operation. Proper eye protection, such as safety goggles or glasses with side shields, and a face mask in dusty environments, are recommended. Loose clothing or jewelry should be avoided, and protective gloves and safety footwear are suggested. The manual also recommends Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection for the circuits or outlets used to power the mower. It warns against pulling the mower back toward the operator, especially when walking, and provides steps for safely backing up the mower. Hands and feet should always be kept away from rotating parts and under the cutting deck. The mower should not be operated in rain or wet grass, only in daylight or good artificial light. Any abnormal vibration should prompt immediate investigation and repair. The mower should never be operated without proper safety devices like the trail shield, discharge cover, grass catcher, and switch control in place and working.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting guide to help users diagnose and resolve common issues, such as the handle not being in position, the mower not starting, uneven cutting, poor mulching, difficulty pushing the mower, or excessive vibration. For any issues that cannot be resolved, the toll-free helpline is provided. The product is double-insulated, eliminating the need for a grounded power cord and supply system, but servicing requires extreme care and should only be performed by a qualified service technician using original factory replacement parts. A four-year limited warranty covers defects in materials, parts, or workmanship for personal use, provided the unit has been maintained according to the manual.
