Overview

The Hercules HCB043 is a 20V Brushless Compact Router, designed for precision routing tasks. This owner's manual provides comprehensive instructions for its safe operation, maintenance, and various applications.

Function Description

The Hercules HCB043 is a versatile compact router powered by a 20V Li-Ion battery. Its primary function is to cut grooves, decorative edges, and other shapes into wood and similar materials. The brushless motor technology ensures efficient power delivery and extended tool life. Key features include a fine depth adjustment for precise control, a quick release lever for easy bit changes, and a locking lever for secure operation. The router is designed for both freehand use and with various guides and templates to achieve specific cuts.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: HCB043
  • Battery Type: Hercules 20V Li-Ion 57373 (sold separately)
  • Charger Type: Hercules 20V/12V Li-Ion 56559 (sold separately)
  • Electrical Rating: 20VDC
  • No Load Speed: 10,000 - 30,000 RPM (revolutions per minute)
  • Collet Size: 1/4" Shank Diameter
  • Max. Plunge Depth: 1-1/2"
  • Motor: 20V Brushless

The router features a speed control dial, allowing users to adjust the RPM to suit different materials and cutting requirements. The fine depth adjustment mechanism enables precise control over the cutting depth, crucial for intricate work. The 1/4" collet size is standard for many router bits, offering versatility in bit selection.

Usage Features

The Hercules HCB043 is designed for ease of use and versatility.

Setup and Adjustment:

  • Edge Guide Installation: The edge guide can be assembled and attached to the router base using a locking screw and wing nut. It helps maintain a consistent distance from the edge of the workpiece.
  • Roller Guide Installation: The roller guide is installed similarly to the edge guide and is used for following curved or irregular edges. Adjustments can be made to ensure the roller guide is perpendicular to the workpiece.
  • Circle Cutting Installation: The circle cutting attachment allows for cutting perfect circles. The center point of the circle is determined by the distance from the router bit.
  • Template Guide Installation: Template guides are used with templates to create specific shapes. The template guide is secured to the router base, and the router bit follows the template's contours.
  • Dust Port Installation: A dust port can be attached to the router for connection to a dust collector, helping to keep the work area clean and reduce airborne dust.
  • Tool Changing (Router Bit Installation): To change router bits, the spindle lock is engaged, and the collet nut is loosened with a wrench. Bits with a 1/4" shank are inserted into the collet, and the nut is tightened securely.
  • Adjusting Cutting Depth: The cutting depth is adjusted by releasing the locking lever, pushing and holding the quick release lever, and moving the router housing up or down. Fine adjustments can be made using the fine depth adjustment wheel.

Operation:

  • Power On/Off: The router is turned on and off using the power switch.
  • Speed Control: The speed control dial allows users to select the appropriate RPM for the material and bit being used. Lower speeds (4-6) are suitable for hardwoods, while higher speeds (1-3) are for softwoods, plastics, and aluminum.
  • General Operation: Always wear ANSI-approved safety goggles and NIOSH-approved breathing protection. Maintain a firm grip on the router with both hands. Move the router smoothly and at a consistent speed to avoid burning the workpiece or overloading the motor. The direction of feed is important for optimal cutting and safety.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and safe operation of the Hercules HCB043 router.

Cleaning, Maintenance, and Lubrication:

  • Before Each Use: Inspect the general condition of the tool. Check for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged electrical wiring, and any other condition that may affect its safe operation.
  • After Use: Wipe external surfaces of the tool with a clean cloth.
  • Router Bit Installation: Refer to the manual for proper router bit installation and maintenance.
  • Battery Pack: The Li-Ion battery pack must be recycled or disposed of properly. Do not short, incinerate, or open the battery.
  • Dust and Debris: Periodically wear ANSI-approved safety goggles and NIOSH-approved breathing protection and blow dust out of the motor vents using dry compressed air.
  • Collet and Router Bits: Periodically wipe the collet and router bits with a light oil to prevent rust.
  • Storage: Disconnect the battery pack and store the battery pack, charger, and tool in a dry indoor area, out of reach of children and away from metal objects to prevent shorting.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Tool will not start: Check for tripped thermal reset breaker, proper battery pack connection, and battery pack charge.
  • Tool operates slowly: Check for excessive pressure applied to the workpiece, low battery power, or worn battery pack.
  • Performance decreases over time: Check for dull or damaged router bits or worn battery pack.
  • Excessive noise or rattling: Check for internal damage or wear, forcing the tool to work too fast, dull or damaged router bits, or blocked motor housing vents.

For all safety precautions whenever diagnosing or servicing the tool, disconnect power supply before service. The Hercules HCB043 comes with a 5-year limited warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. Replacement parts are available through Harbor Freight Tools.
