Do you have a question about the Idex HURST eDRAULIC SC 258 E2 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The HURST eDRAULIC combi tools are designed for rescue operations, specifically for freeing injured persons at accident scenes by cutting through doors, roof beams, and hinges, as well as for pushing open doors or removing obstacles with the aid of a chain set. These devices are particularly suited for road, rail, or aircraft accidents and rescue operations from buildings.

Function Description

The eDRAULIC combi tools are hydraulically operated devices where a piston activates mechanical joints to open or close a set of two opposite blade arms, enabling cutting, spreading, gripping, pulling, and squeezing actions. The movement of the blade arms is controlled by a star grip, which also functions as a dead man's switch, ensuring the tool stops operating when released.

The device can be powered by an external power supply or a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery is inserted into an opening in the tool body and automatically locks into position. The operating time can be extended using a suitable external charger. The tool features an LED light for illuminating the work area, which activates when the battery or power supply is connected.

Usage Features

  • Star Grip Operation: The star grip controls the piston movement for cutting, spreading, pulling, and squeezing. Pushing the star grip forward opens the device, while pulling it back closes it. This "dead-man's function" ensures that releasing the grip automatically returns it to the central position, fully guaranteeing load retention.
  • Battery and Power Supply: The device can be operated with a lithium-ion battery or an external power supply. The battery features a display for charging state and a query button to check the battery level.
  • Cutting: The blades should be positioned at a 90° angle to the object for optimal cutting. Higher cutting capacities can be achieved by positioning the blade's pivot point close to the object. Users must avoid cutting through high-strength parts of the vehicle body (e.g., side impact protection) as this can damage the blades.
  • Spreading: The front of the tips can be used to increase an existing gap. To increase grip and avoid damaging the tips, the grip should be reapplied at an early stage. The highest force develops in the rear area of the plug-on tip or in the rear spreading area of the combination blades.
  • Pulling: Chain sets are required for pulling operations. These sets are fastened to the blades using load bolts in holes "A". Specific chain sets are available for each model (KSV 8/258 for SC 258 E2, KSV 11 for SC 358 E2, KSV 13 for SC 757 E2 and SC 758 E2).
  • Squeezing: Squeezing operations can only take place near the tips of the device.
  • Safety: The devices are not suitable for underwater use, are not waterproof, water-resistant, or liquid-proof/resistant. Exposure to water, oil, or moisture can lead to battery malfunction and fire. Users must wear protective clothing, a safety helmet with visor, protective footwear, and gloves.

Maintenance Features

  • Visual Inspection: Regular inspections are crucial. This includes checking the opening width of the blade arms, general tightness, operability of the star grip, existence and stability of the handle, labels, covers, pivot bolt torque, blade arms for cracks and nicks, sliding plates, bolts, and retaining rings, and illumination of the main switch and work area.
  • Battery and Power Supply Inspection: Check for casing damage, clean and undamaged electrical contacts, undamaged cables, fully charged batteries, battery state display, and ensure the battery has not been exposed to water, oil, or moisture.
  • Functional Test: Check for easy opening and closing of the star grip, absence of unusual noises, and no further movement of cutter arms when interrupting the valve function during the process (dead man's switch).
  • Oil Change: Under normal working conditions, routine oil changes are not necessary. The prerequisite is that the tools are always properly handled and stowed, and preventive maintenance is performed according to the instructions.
  • Protective Equipment: Check the protective equipment used on/in the vicinity of the rescue device, paying particular attention to the protective cover for the movable parts.
  • Checking the Filter in the Battery Shaft: The air suction filter should be checked at least once a year or after use in a dusty environment. The filter can be removed from the outside of the mains unit (or battery) and replaced if severely contaminated.
  • Repairs: Repairs must be carried out by an authorized HURST dealer or personnel specially trained by HURST. Only genuine HURST spare parts should be used. Protective clothing must be worn during repairs. All components should be thoroughly cleaned, as dirt can damage the rescue equipment.
  • Decals: Damaged or illegible decals (safety notices, type plate, etc.) must be replaced.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the motor not starting, blade arms moving slowly or jerkily, device not performing at its given power, star grip not working smoothly, hydraulic fluid leaking, and short operating time between charges. Solutions typically involve charging the battery, replacing the battery, checking power supply connections, or seeking repair by an authorized dealer.
  • Disposal: All packaging materials and removed items should be disposed of properly. Electrical equipment, accessories, and packaging should be disposed of in an environmentally compatible way, following European Directive 2002/96/EC.
