3. Functional Architecture
The architecture and design of the Intel
®
Server Board S5500BC is based on the Intel
®
5500
chipset and the Intel
®
Xeon
®
processor 5500 family series. This chapter provides a high-level
description of the functionality associated with each chipset component and the architectural
blocks that make up this server board.

3.1 Processor Sub-system
The Intel
®
Xeon
®
processor 5500 series is the first generation server/workstation multi-core
processor to implement the following key technologies:
Integrated Memory Controller
Point-to-point link interface based on Intel
®
QuickPath Interconnect (QPI)—formerly
known as Common System Interface.
The processor is optimized for performance with the power efficiencies of a low-power micro
architecture to produce smaller, quieter systems.
