Overview

The Johnson Magnetic Digital Level & Angle Locator with Dot Laser, Model No. 40-6065, is a precision tool designed for accurate angle and inclination measurements. This device combines the functionality of a digital level and an angle locator, enhanced with a visible dot laser for extended working range. It is manufactured to comply with CFR 21, parts 1040.10 and 1040.11, as well as international safety rule IEC 285, and EMC Test standards EN61000-6-3; 2001+A11:2004, EN 6100-6-1:2011, EN 6100-4-2, EN 61000-4-3, EN 60825, and FCC Test according to PART 15.

Function Description

The primary function of this tool is to measure and display angles and inclinations simultaneously. It offers angle measurements in degrees and inclination in five construction languages: degrees, percent, mm/m, in/ft in decimal, and in/ft in fractional. A key feature is the automatic digit inversion for overhead measurements, which ensures readability regardless of the tool's orientation. The integrated visible laser beam extends the working range, allowing for precise alignment over longer distances. The device also includes an automatic shut-off function to conserve battery life and a "hold" function to freeze measurements for convenient reading.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Laser Wavelength: 650nm ± 10
  • Laser Classification: Class IIIa
  • Maximum Power Output: ≤ 5mW
  • Laser Accuracy: ± 1/8"/50 ft. (±0.2mm/m)
  • Working Range Angle: 0°-182.5°
  • Accuracy Angle: ±0.1°
  • Working Range (Angle): 0° to 90°
  • Resolution: 0.1° or 0.1%
  • Accuracy (Angle): ±0.1° for 0° and 90°, and ±0.2° for 1° to 89°
  • Power Supply: 3 "AA" alkaline batteries and 1 3V CR2032 lithium battery
  • Battery Life: Approximately 70 hours of continuous use
  • Dimensions: 23.6" x 2.48" x 1.57" (600 x 63 x 40mm)
  • Weight: 2.64 lbs (1.2kg)
  • Working Temperature: 14°F to 113°F (-10°C to +45°C)

Usage Features

The device is equipped with six operating keys: Power, Laser/Angle Calibration, Slope Calibration, Mode, Sound/Backlight, and Hold.

  • Power Key: Turns the instrument on and off. It beeps twice when turned on and once when turned off.
  • Laser/Angle Calibration Key: A short press turns the laser beam on or off, indicated by a laser icon on the LCD. A long press (more than one second) enters the angle calibration mode.
  • Slope Calibration Key: Used for re-calibrating the instrument in both horizontal and vertical directions.
  • Mode Key: Switches between the five construction languages for measurement (Degrees, Percentage of slope, Millimeters per Meter, Inches per Foot in decimal, and Inches per Foot in fractional). A symbol on the upper right of the screen indicates the current mode.
  • Sound/Backlight Key: A short press toggles the sound function, with a sound icon appearing on the LCD. The level beeps faster as it approaches 0° or 90°, producing a continuous tone at these angles. A long press (more than one second) turns on the backlight.
  • Hold Key: Freezes the current angle reading, causing the display to flash. Pressing it again releases the hold mode.

The device features an angle level arm that can be locked at any angle within the 0° to 180° range using a locking screw. The laser point emitted is parallel with the reference plane, aiding in precise alignment. An automatic shut-off feature powers down the instrument after 20 minutes of inactivity. A flashing battery symbol on the LCD indicates low battery power, prompting replacement. Incline indication arrows guide the user to position the level horizontally or vertically, while a "0.0°" display signifies a perfectly level or plumb position.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Installation/Replacement: For the main "AA" batteries, ensure the instrument is off, open the battery cover, and insert new batteries with correct polarity. For the CR2032 button battery, which powers the angle LCD and is indicated by an "Erro" message when low, remove three screws on its cover, replace the battery, and reassemble.
  • Calibration: It is crucial to verify the instrument's calibration before each use, especially before important measurements, after a drop, or after installing new batteries.
    • Horizontal Calibration Check: Place the level on a smooth, level plane, note the reading after 10 seconds, rotate it 180° on the same plane, and note the second reading. Calibration is needed if the difference exceeds 0.2°.
    • Vertical Calibration Check: Similar to horizontal, but on a smooth vertical plane. Calibration is needed if the difference between two 180° rotated readings exceeds 0.2°.
    • Calibration Procedure: For horizontal calibration, place the level on a flat surface, press "CAL" (displays "-0-"), wait 10 seconds, press "CAL" again (displays "-1-"), turn the level 180°, wait 10 seconds, and press "CAL" once more. A single beep indicates completion; two beeps mean repetition is needed or the sensor may be damaged. The same procedure applies to vertical calibration, with the logo facing both up and down.
    • Angle Calibration: Place the level on a horizontal surface with the angle arm fully closed and power it on. Press and hold the Laser/Cal button until "-1-" appears on the right screen. Fully open the angle arm. Press the Laser/Cal button again until "-2-" appears, then the display should revert to "180.0°". Verify calibration by closing the angle arm, which should then read "0.0°".
  • General Care: This is a precision tool requiring careful handling. Avoid shock vibrations and extreme temperatures. Always turn off the unit before moving or transporting it. Remove batteries for extended storage (over three months) to prevent damage from deterioration. Store the unit in its case when not in use. Keep the unit dry and clean, especially the laser output window, using a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals, strong detergents, or cleaning solvents.
  • Troubleshooting: Common issues include the level not turning on (check battery polarity, clean terminals, replace batteries), laser not turning off (press and hold power button), laser not illuminating (check battery polarity, replace "AA" and CR2032 batteries, clean terminals), "Erro" code (replace CR2032 battery), laser out of calibration or inverted numbers (check "hold" mode, follow calibration procedure, ensure 180° rotation without flipping upside down), laser turning off quickly (clean battery terminals, replace batteries), or unit not calibrating (contact customer service).

Johnson Level & Tool offers a three-year limited warranty. Warranty registration is required within 30 days of purchase by completing the enclosed card and providing proof of purchase. Non-warranty repairs and calibration must be performed by an authorized Johnson® service center.
