Overview

The KNIPEX 97 51 10 is a versatile crimping pliers designed for Western plugs, manufactured in Germany by KNIPEX. This tool is specifically engineered for cutting and stripping unshielded telephone flat cables, as well as for pressing 6-pin and 8-pin Western plugs. Its robust design and integrated features make it suitable for both professional and DIY applications involving telecommunications and network cabling.

Function Description:

The primary function of the KNIPEX 97 51 10 is to facilitate the preparation and termination of telephone and network cables with Western plugs. It combines three essential functions into one tool:

  1. Cutting: The pliers are equipped with a cable cutter that allows for precise cutting of unshielded telephone flat cables (6-pin and 8-pin). This ensures clean cuts, which are crucial for proper cable preparation and connection.
  2. Stripping: The tool features dedicated stripping blades for different cable types. It can strip unshielded telephone flat cables (6-pin and 8-pin) and CAT cables. The stripping mechanism is designed to remove the outer insulation without damaging the inner conductors, ensuring reliable connections.
  3. Crimping: The core function of the pliers is to crimp Western plugs. It has two distinct crimping points: one for 8-pin Western plugs (RJ 45, 11.68 mm wide) and another for 6-pin Western plugs (RJ 11/12, 9.65 mm wide). The integrated forced locking mechanism ensures that the pliers only open once the required crimping pressure has been achieved, guaranteeing a high-quality, secure crimp every time. This mechanism can be released if necessary by twisting a release button.

The tool is designed for use with open plugs without strain relief. It is important to note that "pass through" plugs and closed plugs cannot be crimped with this specific tool.

Usage Features:

The KNIPEX 97 51 10 is designed for ease of use and efficiency across various tasks:

  • Cutting 6-core flat cables: To cut a 6-core flat cable, the cable end is inserted into the holder from the back, and the pliers are pressed completely together.
  • Stripping 6-core flat cables: For stripping, the cable is inserted into the holder from the front until it reaches a specific stop, yielding a stripped length of approximately 6 mm. The pliers are then pressed together, and the cable is pulled out to remove the insulation.
  • Crimping 6-pin flat cables (RJ 11/12): A 6-pin Western plug is inserted into the designated crimping point, and the prepared cable is inserted into the connector as far as it will go. The pliers are then pressed together completely until the forced locking mechanism releases.
  • Cutting and stripping 8-core flat cables (RJ 45): 8-core flat cables can be cut and stripped in a single step. The cable is inserted into the holder from the front, the pliers are pressed completely together, and the cable is pulled out to strip the insulation.
  • Crimping 8-pin flat cables (RJ 45): Similar to 6-pin plugs, an 8-pin Western plug is inserted into its crimping point, the cable is inserted into the connector, and the pliers are pressed completely.
  • Stripping CAT cables: For CAT cables, the cable end is placed in the CAT cable holder. The tool is squeezed slightly and twisted to cut into the insulation. After releasing the forced locking mechanism, the insulation is pulled off.
  • Crimping CAT cables (RJ 45): After preparing the CAT cable (inserting stripped ends into the plug, possibly with an insertion aid), the prepared Western plug is inserted into the 8P crimping point, and the tool is pressed together completely.

The forced locking mechanism is a critical safety and quality feature, ensuring consistent crimping pressure and preventing premature opening of the pliers. The release button provides flexibility if the lock needs to be disengaged before the full crimping cycle is complete.

Maintenance Features:

The KNIPEX 97 51 10 is designed for durability, but regular maintenance ensures its longevity and optimal performance:

  • Lubrication: The joint of the tool should be oiled regularly to maintain smooth operation and prevent wear.
  • Blade Replacement: The tool features replaceable cutting and stripping blades.
    1. To replace the blades, the screws securing them must be unscrewed.
    2. The lower blade can then be pulled out of its guide.
    3. Used blades should be disposed of properly.
    4. New blades are installed by reversing these steps.

This maintenance feature extends the lifespan of the tool, as worn blades can be easily replaced without needing to replace the entire crimping pliers.

Safety Information:

  • Sharp Blades: Users are warned about the danger from sharp blades and advised to handle the tools with care.
  • Intended Use: The tool should only be used for its intended purposes as described (cutting, stripping, and crimping specific cable and plug types). Any use beyond this or unauthorized modifications are considered improper and will void the warranty.
  • Warranty: Warranty claims expire if damage is caused by improper operation, poor maintenance, unauthorized repairs, or the use of non-original accessories/spare parts. Defective components must be repaired immediately to minimize damage and ensure safety.

The KNIPEX 97 51 10 is a reliable and efficient tool for anyone working with telephone and network cabling, offering precision, durability, and user-friendly features backed by KNIPEX's commitment to quality.
