3-4 Scheduled Maintenance TP-5631 7/96
WARNING
Explosion.
Can cause severe injury or death. Relays in
battery charger cause arcs or sparks.
Locate in a well ventilated area. Keep explosive
fumes away.
WARNING
Sulfuric acid in batteries.
Can cause severe injury or death.
Use protective goggles and clothes. Can cause
permanent damage to eyes, burn skin, and eat
holes in clothing.
Explosion can cause severeinjury or death. Battery
gases cancauseanexplosion. Donot smoke or permit
flame or spark to occur near a battery at any time,
particularly when it is being charged. Avoid contacting
terminalswithtools,etc.topreventburnsandtoprevent
sparks that could cause an explosion. Remove
wristwatch,rings,andanyotherjewelry beforehandling
battery. Never connect negative (--) battery cable to
positive (+) connection terminal of starter solenoid. Do
nottest battery condition by shortingterminalstogether
orsparkscouldignitebattery gasesorfuelvapors. Any
compartment containing batteries must be well
ventilated to prevent accumulation of explosive gases.
To avoid sparks, do not disturb battery charger
connections while battery is being charged and always
turn charger off before disconnecting battery
connections. When disconnecting battery, remove
negative lead first and reconnect it last.
Sulfuric acid in batteriescan causesevere injuryor
death. Sulfuric acid in batteries can cause permanent
damage to eyes, burn skin, and eat holes in clothing.
Alwayswearsplash-proof safety goggleswhenworking
around the battery. If battery electrolyte is splashed in
the eyes oron skin, immediately flushthe affectedarea
for15minuteswithlargequantitiesofcleanwater. Inthe
caseofeyecontact,seekimmediatemedicalaid. Never
addacidtoabatteryoncethebatteryhasbeenplacedin
service. Doingsomayresult inhazardousspatteringof
electrolyte.
Cleaning
Keepbattery cleanby wipingit witha dampcloth. Keep
all electrical connections dry and tight. If corrosion is
present, disconnect cables from battery and remove
corrosion with a wire brush. Clean battery and cables
withasolutionofbakingsodaandwater. Becarefulthat
cleaning solution does not enter battery cells. When
cleaningiscomplete,flushbatteryandcableswithclean
water and wipe with a dry cloth. Coat terminals with
petroleum jelly or other nonconductivegrease after the
battery cables are reconnected.
Checking Electrolyte Level
It is not possible to check the electrolyte level of a
maintenance-free battery. Check the electrolyte level
beforeeachstart-up. Removefillercaps andverifythat
electrolyte level is upto bottoms of filler holes. Refillas
necessary with distilled water or clean tap water. DO
NOT add fresh electrolyte! Tighten all filler caps.
