TP-6081 4/0014 Section 3 Scheduled Maintenance
3.10 Generator Storage
Follow the procedure below when storing the generator
set for 3 months or more.
Generator Storage Procedure
1. Start and run the generator set until it reaches
operating temperature or about 15 minutes.
2. Stop the generator set.
3. Change the oil. See Section 3.3.4, Oil Change.
4. Run the generator set until the fuel supply is
emptied or drain the fuel completely from the fuel
tank, fuel pump, and carburetor to prevent
accumulated moisture from mixing with the fuel.
5. Remove the spark plug. Pour approximately
1 tablespoon of engine oil into the spark plug hole.
Crank the engine two or three revolutions to
lubricate the cylinder. Reinstall the spark plug.
6. Clean the exterior of the generator set and spread
a light film of oil or silicon spray over exposed
surfaces that may be subject to rust or corrosion.
7. Disconnect and remove the battery. Place the
battery in a warm, dry location for the storage
period. Do not store the battery on concrete.
Recharge the battery once a month to maintain full
charge.
8. Select a well-ventilated (not humid or dusty)
location to store the generator.
9. Cover the entire unit with a dust cover.
