Overview

LD Performance Launch Control Module

The LD Performance Launch Control Module, also known as LaunchItPro, is a sophisticated device designed to enhance engine performance by precisely controlling and modifying ignition pulses to the coil(s). It offers features like optimized launching, flat-shifting, and customizable rev-limiter sounds, primarily for turbocharged vehicles.

Function Description

The core function of the Launch Control Module is to monitor engine RPM and, when activated, apply modifications to the spark delay and selectively skip spark events. This process creates a controlled rev-limit, preventing the engine from exceeding a user-defined RPM threshold.

The module operates in two distinct modes:

  1. Normal Mode: In this mode, the engine functions as usual, with the launch control module remaining inactive and making no changes to the ignition system.
  2. Launch Activated Mode: When activated (typically by pressing the clutch), the module engages its rev-limiting capabilities. It precisely calculates the current RPM based on every ignition pulse and compares it to the set limit. If the engine RPM surpasses this limit, the module intervenes by introducing spark delay and spark cuts.

A key feature is the ability to perform flat-shifts. This allows the driver to shift gears while keeping the throttle pedal fully depressed. For turbocharged vehicles, this significantly reduces turbo lag during shifts and shortens overall shifting times, leading to improved acceleration and performance.

The module also offers customizable rev-limiter characteristics. By adjusting the "Miss" and "Delay" settings, users can alter the sound and "feel" of the rev limiter. A higher "Delay" setting, for instance, can produce a louder exhaust sound and even flames, adding a dramatic effect.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Channels: The Launch Control Module features 8 independent channels, allowing it to control up to 8 ignition coils. This versatility makes it compatible with a wide range of engine configurations.
  • Signal Type: The unit is designed to work with petrol engines that utilize ignition coils with integrated amplifiers or external ignition modules. It specifically requires 5V signals for each ignition event.
  • Coil Compatibility: This edition of the module does not support direct coil control (i.e., coils without an internal amplifier).
  • Power Supply: The module requires a +12V ignition "ON" power supply and a ground connection.
  • Input/Output Signals: Each channel (CH1 to CH8) has an "IN" and "OUT" connection. The "IN" connects to the signal from the ECU, and the "OUT" connects to the ignition module channel or coil signal wire.
  • Clutch Switch Input: A dedicated "Launch" wire connects to the clutch switch. The launch control is activated when this wire is connected to ground (i.e., when the clutch is pressed). If this wire is permanently grounded, the module will operate as a rev limiter continuously.
  • Adjustable Knobs: The device features three main control knobs:
    • MISS: Sets the number of missed sparks during rev limiting. This allows unburned fuel to build up in the exhaust, contributing to louder sounds and potential flames.
    • DELAY: Controls the ignition delay. A larger delay generally results in a louder sound and more flames.
    • RPM: Sets the desired RPM limit level for the launch control.

Usage Features

  • Precision Control: The module employs a fast processor and intelligent programming to individually manage every ignition pulse. This ensures that spark events never occur too early or randomly, which could otherwise lead to "detonation" and potential engine damage.
  • User-Configurable Settings: The "Miss" and "Delay" settings provide a high degree of customization, allowing users to fine-tune the rev-limiter's sound and performance characteristics to their preference.
  • Optimized Launching: By maintaining the engine within an optimal RPM range when the clutch is pressed, the module helps achieve the best possible launch, minimizing wheel spin and maximizing initial acceleration.
  • Flat-Shift Capability: This feature allows for seamless gear changes without lifting off the throttle, which is particularly beneficial for turbocharged vehicles by eliminating lag.
  • Easy Activation: The launch control is activated by a simple clutch press, making it intuitive to use during performance driving.

Maintenance Features

  • Installation Flexibility: The manual provides detailed wiring diagrams and instructions for various car models and ignition system types, including 1.8T Audi/VW, Subaru Impreza (multiple coil configurations), Mitsubishi FTO, VR6, VW 3-pin coil with distributor, Toyota MR2/VAST ignition (AE86), Honda (P30 ECU and other ECUs), and Mazda MX5 (various generations).
  • Troubleshooting Tips: The manual advises on initial setup, such as setting the "RPM" knob to maximum initially to ensure the engine starts, and then gradually decreasing it to find the desired rev-limit.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are warned about the potential stress on the engine and turbo when increasing the "Delay" setting due to higher pressures and temperatures.
  • Connection Guidance: Clear instructions are given for connecting the module's wires, including specific pinouts for different ECUs and ignition systems. For instance, it specifies how to identify and connect to ignition signal wires, 12V ignition power, and ground.
  • Insulation Importance: The manual repeatedly emphasizes the importance of properly insulating all electrical connections to ensure reliability and safety.
  • Clutch Switch Installation: Detailed steps are provided for installing the clutch switch, including removing the original bolt and routing the wire through the firewall.
  • Multimeter Usage: For Honda ECUs and other installations, it is recommended to use a multimeter to confirm +12V and GND connections, ensuring correct wiring.
  • Support: The manual encourages users to contact LD Performance for more information and specific installations if their car is not listed or if they have unique requirements.
