Overview

The Levitronix BFS-i06 is a bearingless fan designed for industrial production machines and equipment, particularly in semiconductor and chemical manufacturing, where ventilation circuits are required. This user manual provides comprehensive information for its safe and effective use, covering specifications, installation, operation, adjustment, inspection, and maintenance.

Function Description:

The BFS-i06 bearingless fan operates without physical bearings, utilizing magnetic levitation for its rotor. This design minimizes friction and wear, contributing to a longer lifespan and potentially cleaner operation, which is critical in sensitive environments like semiconductor manufacturing. The fan is designed to move air or other gases within a ventilation system, providing either pressure or flow depending on the application. It can be controlled via a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), RS485 interface, or a dedicated user panel. The system also supports advanced control features through the Levitronix Service Software for detailed configuration, troubleshooting, and parameter logging.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Pressure and Flow: The fan delivers a maximum pressure of 915 Pa (3.68 inH2O) and a maximum flow of 500 m³/h (294 cfm). At its point of maximum power, it achieves 850 Pa and 440 m³/h at 13000 rpm. An optional 24 V supply voltage configuration offers 320 Pa and 260 m³/h at 8000 rpm.
  • Power Input: The standard configuration requires 48 V DC ±10% and consumes 240 W. An optional 24 V DC ±5% input is available for reduced maximum speed (8000 rpm) and 65 W consumption.
  • IP Rating: The fan is rated IP67, indicating high protection against dust ingress and temporary immersion in water.
  • Environmental Conditions: It operates in an ambient and gas temperature range of 0 to 40 °C. Storage temperature ranges from -20 to 80 °C. Operating humidity is 15-95% (non-condensing).
  • Materials: The housing and rotor are made of polypropylene, which is electrically conductive and flame retardant. The cable features a PVC jacket and PVDF bushing.
  • Weight: The 5 m version of the fan weighs 1.4 kg (3.1 lb).
  • Electrical Interfaces:
    • PLC: Includes 2 analog inputs (4-20 mA), 1 analog output (4-20 mA), 2 digital inputs (0-24 V optocoupler), and 2 digital outputs (0-24 V / 100 mA open drain). These are configurable via the Levitronix Service Software or Modbus protocol.
    • RS485: Supports Modbus protocol for extended control or service through a fieldbus or the Levitronix Service Software.
  • Cable Length: Standard cable lengths are 5 m or 2.2 m for the fan, with additional 0.2 m or 0.8 m wires for power and PLC signals.
  • Mechanical Interface: Features flanges on both motor sides with 4 x Ø 12 mm mounting holes on a 138 mm diameter, with an inside flange diameter of 100 mm and an outside dimension of 120 mm x 120 mm.
  • ATEX / IECEx Certification: Specific types of the BFS-i06 are certified for use in Ex classified locations (II 2G Ex h mb IIC T6 Gb and II 2D Ex h mb IIIC T85 °C Db), suitable for Zone 1/21 or Zone 2/22.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Installation must be performed by qualified personnel. The fan can be integrated into various duct systems (square, round, small, or large diameter) and can be operated in series or parallel configurations to achieve higher pressure or flow rates. Mounting options include through-holes and self-cutting thread inserts. An interface panel (FIP-2.1) is available for easy wiring of up to four fans to a power supply and PLC.
  • Control Modes:
    • Closed-loop speed control: Utilizes internal sensors to maintain a setpoint rotational speed.
    • Closed-loop process control (pressure or flow): Requires an external pressure or flow sensor connected to the analog input of the PLC. Control parameters must be adapted to the sensor and hydraulic circuit.
  • Multi-fan Operation: Multiple fans can be arranged in series to multiply pressure while maintaining flow, or in parallel to multiply flow while maintaining pressure.
  • Negative Rotation: The Levitronix Service Software or Modbus commands can enable negative rotational speeds, which can be used to block existing flow, potentially replacing active control valves. However, for safety, passive check valves or a safety shutdown mechanism are recommended to prevent unintended negative flow.
  • Accessories: A range of accessories is available, including adaptor cable sets, AC/DC power supplies, an interface panel, a user panel (LUI-B.1) for handheld control, USB-RS485 adaptors for PC connection, and ATEX cable sealing systems.
  • Safety Precautions: Strict adherence to safety guidelines is crucial. The fan rotor contains strong magnets and operates at high speeds, posing risks of injury or damage to sensitive electronic devices. Hazardous voltages may be present, requiring a galvanically separated and certified power supply. For ATEX/IECEx applications, specific precautions regarding operational temperature, object protection (IP20 for inlet, IP10 for outlet), and avoiding operation against closed valves are mandatory.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting: The integrated PLC provides status and error signals. For detailed analysis and debugging, the Levitronix Service Software is recommended, which allows communication with the fan via a PC and an RS485 to USB converter. The software facilitates operation, troubleshooting, parameter logging, and user-specific configurations.
  • Technical Support: Levitronix Technical Service Department provides support for troubleshooting, detailed technical information, and assistance with specific configurations.
  • Disposal: Equipment must be disposed of according to local legislation, adhering to the European WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU for marked devices.
  • Inrush Current: The BFS-i06 relies on the power supply's inrush current limiter. To prevent high inrush currents from disturbing power supplies, it is recommended to connect the fan to the power supply before powering up the supply.
