Overview

This document describes a DVD Player, specifically models DP540H and DP542H, designed for playing various disc formats and multimedia files.

Function Description

The primary function of this device is to play DVDs and other compatible disc formats, including DVD-Video, DVD±R/RW, Audio CDs, and CD-R/RW. It supports playback of video, audio, and photo files from these discs. For the DP542H model, it also features a USB port, allowing playback of video, music, and photo files directly from a USB device. The player offers standard playback controls such as play, pause, stop, scan, and skip. Advanced playback features include repeating specific sections (A-B repeat), setting desired starting times, marking favorite scenes, and adjusting slow-motion playback. The device can output video signals through various connections, including Video Out, Component Video Out, and HDMI Out, supporting different resolutions up to 1080p for a full HD experience on compatible TVs. Audio output is available via Audio Out (L/R) and Digital Audio Out (Coaxial), allowing connection to amplifiers for enhanced sound.

The player includes an on-screen display (OSD) to show various information and settings during playback, such as title/chapter numbers, elapsed time, audio language, subtitle language, and camera angles. Users can navigate menus and adjust settings using the remote control. The device also supports different TV aspect ratios (4:3 and 16:9) and display modes (Letterbox and Panscan) to optimize viewing for various TV screens. Audio settings allow selection of digital audio signal types (Bitstream or PCM) for Dolby Digital, DTS, and MPEG formats, depending on the connected amplifier's capabilities. It also features Dynamic Range Control (DRC) to clarify sound at lower volumes and a Vocal setting for multi-channel karaoke DVDs.

A unique feature of the DP542H model is the ability to record Audio CDs directly to a USB device. This "USB direct recording" function allows users to convert tracks from an Audio CD into MP3 files on a connected USB flash drive. Users can choose to record individual tracks, all tracks, or a programmed list of tracks, and select different recording bitrates for varying sound quality and file size.

Usage Features

The device is designed for straightforward operation. Discs are loaded via an open/close button on the front panel or remote control. For disc playback, the unit typically starts automatically for most DVD-ROMs. For Audio CDs, users can select specific tracks. When playing files from a disc or USB device (DP542H only), files are selected using navigation buttons and confirmed with the ENTER button. The remote control provides comprehensive control over all functions, including power, disc tray operation, numerical input, TV control (volume, channel, source, power), playback controls, menu navigation, and specific function buttons for display, audio, subtitle, angle, setup, marker, search, program, zoom, repeat, A-B, and resolution.

The setup menu allows users to customize various settings. The [LANGUAGE] menu enables selection of the menu language, disc audio, subtitle, and menu languages. The [DISPLAY] menu offers options for TV aspect ratio and display mode. The [AUDIO] menu allows configuration of digital audio output types. The [LOCK] menu provides parental control features, requiring a 4-digit password to set rating levels and an area code. The [OTHERS] menu includes settings for Black Level Expansion (B.L.E), REC Bitrate (for USB recording on DP542H), and DivX® VOD registration.

For photo playback, the device supports viewing photo files as a slide show, adjusting slide show speed, and rotating photos. When viewing enlarged photos, users can zoom in and navigate the zoomed image. If a disc contains both music and photo files, music can be played during a slide show.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides essential safety information and maintenance guidelines to ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the device. Users are advised to read the safety information carefully, particularly regarding electrical shock hazards and laser radiation. Proper ventilation is emphasized, with warnings against blocking cabinet openings. The power cord should be protected from physical abuse and regularly inspected for damage.

For disc handling, users are instructed not to touch the playback side, hold discs by the edges, and avoid sticking paper or tape on them. Discs should be stored in their cases after use and kept away from direct sunlight or heat sources. For cleaning the unit, a soft, dry cloth is recommended; strong solvents like alcohol, benzine, or thinner should be avoided as they can damage the surface. The manual also notes that the unit is a high-tech, precision device, and if the optical pick-up lens or disc drive parts become dirty or worn, picture quality may diminish, recommending contact with an authorized service center for such issues.

Regarding USB devices (DP542H only), the manual advises against extracting the device during operation and recommends regular backups to prevent data loss. It also specifies compatible USB device formats (FAT16 or FAT32) and warns against using USB extension cables, hubs, multi-readers, or external HDDs, as these may prevent the USB device from being recognized. The USB port is not for connecting to a PC or for use as a storage device.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting section to help users resolve common issues, such as no power, disc playback problems, remote control malfunction, poor picture/sound quality, and no picture/sound output. Solutions often involve checking connections, disc condition, remote control battery, or adjusting settings like resolution and audio output.
