Overview

The device described in the manual is the Lippert Ground Control® 3.0 5th Wheel Leveling Prepped Kit. This system is designed to provide power operation for the 5th wheel landing gear, eliminating the need for manual cranking and making it quicker and easier to raise and lower the front of an RV on uneven terrain. It can also be upgraded to a fully automatic 6-point leveling system.

Function Description:

The Ground Control® 3.0 5th Wheel Landing Gear operates independently to level an RV. It allows users to raise and lower the front of their RV with the push of a button, providing a more convenient and efficient leveling experience compared to manual methods. The "Prepped Kit" designation indicates that it's designed for OEM installation and includes the necessary components to set up the landing gear system, with provisions for future expansion to a full 6-point automatic leveling system.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Requirements: The system requires circuit protection. LCI recommends a 30 amp auto-reset circuit breaker for the landing gear system and a 50 amp circuit breaker for future upgrade installations (e.g., for a full leveling system).
  • Wiring: A minimum of 6 AWG wire is needed for all power and ground wiring. OEM is responsible for supplying miscellaneous wiring and connectors.
  • Switch Panel Dimensions: The cutout for the switch panel is 3 3/8 inches wide by 2 3/4 inches high.
  • Manual Override Tools:
    • Top of Jack Motor Override: Requires a 3/8 inch drive ratchet and extension (no socket).
    • Bottom of Jack Motor Override: Requires a 3/8 inch drive ratchet and extension, and a 5/16 inch socket.
  • Motor Voltage for Manual Override: A 12-18 volt cordless screw gun or pneumatic screw gun is acceptable for manual override; an impact screw gun should not be used as it may damage the motor.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Operation: The system features a switch panel with "Up" and "Down" buttons for both passenger and driver sides, allowing for independent or simultaneous control of the landing gear.
  • Quick Release Bolt-on Pull Pins: The landing gear utilizes quick release bolt-on pull pins for extending and retracting the inner legs. These pins must be fully inserted through both sides of the tube prior to use and retraction.
  • Prepped for Upgrade: The kit is designed with future expansion in mind. It includes connections for future leveling installations (e.g., additional jacks, rear sensor harness, and a 50 amp circuit breaker prep wire for a future leveling controller power), allowing for an upgrade to a fully automatic 6-point leveling system.
  • Safety Guidelines:
    • The system should only be operated when the trailer is parked on a reasonably level surface and the tires are chocked.
    • All persons and property must be clear of the trailer during operation.
    • The battery power source must be fully charged.
    • The footpad must be properly secured before operation to prevent damage or injury.
    • Electric landing gear is designed for vertical operation; excessive side loads can cause damage.
    • The bolt-on pull pin inner leg must be fully retracted before moving the trailer.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a basic troubleshooting table for common issues such as "Unable to level trailer" and "Switch does not activate landing gear," offering potential causes and solutions (e.g., checking battery voltage, wiring, or tow vehicle connection).
  • Manual Override Procedures: In case of power loss or system malfunction, the landing gear can be manually overridden.
    • Top of Jack Motor Override: Involves finding a port on the top of the jack motor, removing a rubber plug, inserting a 3/8 inch drive, and turning to extend or retract the jack.
    • Bottom of Jack Motor Override: Involves finding a port on the bottom of the jack motor, removing a rubber plug, inserting a 5/16 inch socket, and turning to extend or retract the jack.
    • It is recommended to unplug the power harness to the motor before performing manual override.
    • The trailer MUST be supported with jack stands at both the front and rear before performing any troubleshooting or service underneath.

The manual also emphasizes safety warnings and cautions, including the importance of wearing eye protection and other safety equipment during installation and maintenance, and being aware of moving parts. It also notes that all electrical wiring harnesses must be properly secured and installed according to RVIA electrical standards.
