Overview

This document is an operation manual for the Maxon Me2-Series C2 Pickup Liftgate, a hydraulic liftgate designed for loading and unloading cargo from vehicles. The manual, identified as M-14-36 REV A, was published in January 2021.

Function Description

The Maxon Me2-Series C2 Liftgate is a vehicle-mounted hydraulic lifting device that facilitates the movement of cargo between the ground and the vehicle's bed height. It is designed to operate smoothly and quietly, with the primary noticeable noise coming from the power unit during platform elevation. The liftgate is intended solely for loading and unloading cargo and should not be used for any other purpose, including lifting people.

Important Technical Specifications

The Me2-Series C2 Liftgates are available in three different load capacities:

  • C2 1300 LB CAPACITY [590 KG]
  • C2 1500 LB CAPACITY [680 KG]
  • C2 1600 LB CAPACITY [725 KG]

Operators must never exceed the rated load capacity of the specific liftgate model. The hydraulic system requires ISO Grade 32 hydraulic oil; using any other type of oil will void the cylinder warranty.

Usage Features

The liftgate operation involves several steps, starting with activation and ending with stowing the platform for transport.

Activating the Liftgate:

  1. Apply Power: Push the "POWER ON" switch on the liftgate control. An amber "POWER ON" light will illuminate.
  2. Activate Liftgate: Push the "ACTIVATED" switch twice within one second. A red "LIFTGATE ACTIVATED" light will turn on. The control provides a 90-second window for operation, extended by 90 seconds each time the toggle switch is moved UP or DN. After 90 seconds of inactivity, the control deactivates.
  3. Pressurize Hydraulic System: Hold the control switch "UP" for one second and then release it.

Unfolding the Platform:

  1. Unlock Latches: If necessary, remove any locks from the LH and RH platform latches.
  2. Release Latches: Pull the LH latch to the side until it is free of its pin, then rotate it down. Repeat for the RH latch, standing to the side of the RH column, holding the top of the platform with one hand, and pushing the latch with the other until free of its pin.
  3. Unfold Platform: Unfold the platform.
  4. Unfold Flipover (if equipped): If the platform has a flipover, unfold it.
  5. Lower to Ground: Use the control switch to lower the platform (DN) to the ground level. Release the switch once the platform reaches the ground.

Loading Vehicle:

  1. Position Load: Place all loads as close as possible to the inboard edge of the platform, with the heaviest part towards the vehicle bed. Loads should be moved across the ramp (if applicable) to the platform, but never rested solely on the flipover and ramp portion.
  2. Raise Platform: Use the control switch to raise the platform (UP) from ground level to bed height. Release the switch when the platform reaches the bed height.
  3. Move Load into Vehicle: Carefully move the load into the vehicle.

Unloading Vehicle:

  1. Position Load: Push the load out of the vehicle onto the platform, placing it as close as possible to the inboard edge with the heaviest part towards the vehicle body.
  2. Lower Platform: Use the control switch to lower the platform (DN) and load to the ground. Release the switch when the platform reaches ground level.
  3. Move Load off Platform: Carefully move the load off the platform to a safe location. Repeat for additional loads.

Stowing Platform:

  1. Raise Platform: Use the control switch to raise the platform (UP) from ground level to bed height. Release the switch when the platform reaches bed height.
  2. Fold Flipover (if equipped): If the platform has a flipover, fold it.
  3. Fold Platform: Fold the platform upright against the columns.
  4. Latch Platform: Latch the platform pin to the RH column, then repeat for the LH column.
  5. Lock Latches (if necessary): Lock the latches to the platform pins on both the RH and LH columns.

Turning Off Power:

  1. Deactivate Liftgate: Push the "ACTIVATED" switch twice within one second. The red "ACTIVATED" light will turn off.
  2. Turn Off Power: Push the "POWER ON" switch. The amber "POWER ON" light will turn off.
  3. The liftgate is now ready for transport.

Safety Warnings:

  • Incorrect operation can cause serious personal injury.
  • Do not allow untrained persons to operate the liftgate.
  • Never exceed the rated load capacity.
  • Keep all body parts clear of moving liftgate components.
  • Be aware of bystanders and nearby objects during operation.
  • Comply with all decals and warnings.
  • Keep decals clean and legible; replace if missing or damaged.
  • Never drive a forklift on the platform.
  • Stow the platform correctly when not in use to prevent hazards.
  • Listen for unusual noises (scraping, grating, binding) during operation and address them immediately.
  • USE GOOD COMMON SENSE.
  • Never use a cell phone while operating the liftgate.
  • Do not ride on the platform or allow others to ride on it.
  • When unfolding the platform, never operate the control switch or stand in the path of the platform.
  • When unloading, always push the load out onto the platform to prevent falls.
  • Before lowering the platform, ensure the surrounding area is clear of people and objects.

Maintenance Features

The manual emphasizes the importance of daily operation checks to ensure safe and proper functioning of the liftgate.

Recommended Daily Operation Checks: (Performed with the vehicle parked on flat ground and the parking brake set.)

  • Battery Check: Ensure batteries are fully charged, and terminals are clean and tight.
  • Platform Latches: Verify the platform is securely latched in the stowed position, latches are undamaged, and platform chains are in place.
  • Main Frame Housing: Check the cover for damage and secure bolting; look for hydraulic fluid leaks.
  • Hydraulic Hoses: Inspect hose routing from cylinders to the main frame, ensuring connections are secure, and there are no cracks, chafing, or fluid leaks.
  • Controls: Verify standard and optional controls are in place and undamaged.
  • Decals: Ensure all decals are in place, legible, clean, and undamaged.
  • Platform Unfolding/Lowering: Check that platform latches unlock and release smoothly. Ensure the platform (and flipover, if equipped) unfolds smoothly to the operating position and lowers to the ground without binding.
  • Structural Components: Inspect the main frame, columns, lift arms, and parallel arms for cracks and bends. Ensure platform chains are undamaged and securely connected. Verify all bolts and pins are in place and undamaged.
  • Platform Surfaces: Check the platform and flipover for cracks, holes, and bends on load-carrying surfaces and side plates. Ensure load-carrying surfaces on the main frame housing, platform, and flipover are clean (no oil, debris, or corrosion).
  • Hydraulic Cylinders: Check for fluid leaks.
  • Operational Cycle Test (without load): Operate the liftgate through one full cycle (raise to bed height, lower to ground). Listen for unusual noises ("jerking" motion, uneven movement exceeding 1 inch) during raising and lowering. At bed height, ensure LH and RH platform chains feel evenly tight.

If any issues are found during these checks, the liftgate must not be operated until a qualified mechanic performs service or repairs.
