The Maxon TSD-4000 Series Digital/Analog Radios are designed for reliable two-way communication, offering both digital and analog modes to ensure compatibility with existing systems and facilitate a smooth transition to digital. These radios come in two main configurations: display models (TSD-4424 UHF, TSD-4124 VHF) and non-display models (TSD-4416 UHF, TSD-4116 VHF), catering to different user preferences and operational needs.
The primary function of the TSD-4000 Series radios is to enable clear and efficient voice communication over a specified frequency range. They operate on DMR Tier II TDMA, allowing for two time slots of 6.25 kHz each in digital mode, which enhances channel efficiency. The radios are equipped with an AMBE3000 Vocoder Chip with AMBE+2 Voice Compression Algorithm for superior digital voice quality.
For the display models (TSD-4424/4124), users can navigate through a comprehensive menu system to access various functions. The main menu includes options for Contacts, Messages, Call Logs, Voice Record, Scan, Zone Select, Settings, and Radio Info. In digital mode, the radio supports individual, group, and all calls, as well as text messaging. The "Contacts" menu allows users to manage their contact list, initiate calls, and utilize advanced features like "Stun Radio," "Revive Radio," "Check Radio," and "Monitor Radio" to manage other radios in their fleet. "Stun Radio" disables a target radio's transmission, "Revive Radio" restores it, "Check Radio" verifies if a target radio is receiving, and "Monitor Radio" activates the target radio's microphone to listen to its surroundings.
The "Messages" menu facilitates SMS communication with programmable quick messages (up to 10 messages, 40 characters each). It also includes an "Inbox" for received messages and an "Outbox" for sent messages, each capable of storing up to 10 messages. The "Call Logs" menu records the history of individual calls, while group and all calls are not saved here but managed through the message inbox and outbox.
A notable feature is "Voice Record," which allows users to record incoming and outgoing digital radio calls. This function can be turned ON or OFF via the Settings menu and saves up to 63 two-minute transmissions. Older recordings are automatically deleted as new ones are captured.
Both display and non-display models support "Scan" functionality, which allows the radio to monitor channels in a programmed scan list. When activity is detected on a channel, the radio stops scanning to receive the transmission. "Zones" are used to organize channels, with display models supporting up to 32 dynamic zones and a maximum of 512 channels.
The "Settings" menu on display models offers extensive customization, including "Power Level" (High/Low transmission power), "Voice Encryption" (for digital mode, with adjustable key length up to 256), "VOX" (voice-activated transmission with adjustable sensitivity), "Lone Worker" (sends emergency calls if no activity is detected within a set time), "BCL/BCLO" (Busy Channel Lockout/Override to prevent transmission on busy channels), "Keypad Lock" (locks all buttons except PTT and emergency), "Tones" (on/off for all radio tones), "Backlight" (on/off/timed), "Brightness" (1-7 levels), "LED Control" (on/off for status LED), "Language" (Korean/English), "Screen" (3 display modes), and "Power Save" (adjusts radio activity checks to conserve battery).
Non-display models (TSD-4416/4116) offer a more streamlined interface, relying on a channel knob and programmable buttons for operation. The "Power ON/OFF/Volume Control Knob" turns the radio on/off and adjusts volume. The "Channel Knob" changes channels, with voice announcements indicating the selected channel. The "PTT Button" is used for transmitting and receiving. Programmable buttons (P-Button, M-Button, TOP Button) can be assigned various functions such as toggling transmit power (High/Low), monitoring open channels, or activating emergency/SOS functions.
