Troubleshooting
Possible Cause

• Battery switch turned off (if so
equipped)
• Turn switch on.
Trouble
Starter motor
won’t crank en-
gine or cranks it
very slowly
• Remote control not in neutral
position
• Open circuit breaker or blown
fuse.
• Loose or dirty electrical connec-
tions or damaged wiring
• Bad battery
• Position control lever properly. Lever MUST
BE EXACTLY in neutral.
• Check and reset circuit breaker or replace fuse.
• Check all associated electrical connections
and wires (especially battery cables). Refer to
wiring diagram, following. Clean and tighten
faulty connection. Repair or replace wiring.
• Test and replace if bad.
Engine won’t
start or is hard
to start
• Improper starting procedure
• Empty fuel tank or fuel shut-off
valve closed (if so equipped)
• Faulty fuel pump
• Engine flooded
• Faulty ignition system com-
ponent
• Clogged fuel filters
• Contaminated fuel
• Fuel line or tank vent line kinked
or clogged
• Review starting procedure under “Operation
Instructions.”
• Fill tank or open valve.
• Check sight-tube for fuel. Have your dealer re-
place pump, if fuel is present.
• Do not attempt to start engine for at least 5 min-
utes; then, follow the procedure for starting a
flooded engine, found in the “Operation” sec-
tion of this manual.
• Service ignition system.
• Replace filters.
• Inspect fuel for water or other contaminants. If
contaminated, drain tank and flush with fresh
fuel.
• Replace kinked lines or blow out lines with
compressed air to remove obstruction.
• EFI System Fault • Have EFI System checked by an Authorized
MerCruiser Dealer.
